    They Were Expendable (1945)

Anyone who makes a war movie these days should stop and watch John Ford's They Were Expendable as a prerequisite. At its core, it tells the story of how the Navy's then-new PT boats became a major part of WWII, but that's arguably the least interesting part. Ford shot the film at the tail end of the war, and it may have been the first film to capture the alternating thrills and horrors of combat. read more...

    The Stranger (1946)

After making the financial flops Citizen Kane and The Magnificent Ambersons and losing his RKO contract, Orson Welles made The Stranger (1946) as a last-ditch attempt to prove that he could deliver a profitable Hollywood film as well as anyone. So this thriller starring Edward G. Robinson as a post-WWII Nazi hunter and Welles as a Nazi spy hiding out in an American small town comes across as strangely... normal. read more...

      The Golden Coach (1952)

Critics of the time considered Renoir's color films inferior to his black-and-whites, but that is not necessarily the case, as the full-color, English-language The Golden Coach is one of his greatest achievements. Though the film is a weird mix of light humor and weighty seriousness, it's the centerpiece performance by Anna Magnani that makes all the difference. She's a true force of nature, fighting off three different suitors from three walks of life while trying to make ends meet with her traveling theater show. read more...

      The Big Heat (1953)

The Big Heat is generally recognized as one of Fritz Lang's strongest pictures from his American period. Glenn Ford plays a detective whose wife (Jocelyn Brando) is killed after he pokes his nose too far into a local gangster's business. Lee Marvin co-stars as a nasty thug in charge of funny business and Gloria Grahame all but steals the picture as his smart-aleck girlfriend. The most famous scene has Marvin pitching a pot of hot coffee into Grahame's face, but the most powerful scene shows Ford at home enjoying his family life for a good five minutes before an explosion ends his wife's life -- Lang at his cruelest. read more...

        The Godfather Part III (1990)

Very few have stepped up to bat to defend The Godfather Part III (1990), which I consider a masterpiece and the equal of Parts I and II. As Coppola reveals (several times) in his commentary track, Godfather III was originally to be called The Death of Michael Corleone, and that's essentially what it is. It's the final chapter of a dark life and an epilogue -- one that ends appropriately with a whimper instead of a bang. read more...
