    Mr. Arkadin (1955)

Of the thirteen finished, released films that Orson Welles directed, only two were written directly for the screen and not based on any other material, Citizen Kane and Mr. Arkadin. Many critics have noticed the connection between the two: a flashback structure, a third party snooping around in the past life of a great figure. But the two films are markedly different. Mr. Arkadin (a.k.a. Confidential Report) is pulpier and more deliberately flashy, and at the same time it suffers badly from its technical shortcomings. The sound is horrid, and the film stock on even the best prints makes sickening jumps with each edit. And yet it's still a spectacular film, a complete and total Orson Welles film with his unique fingerprints all over it. I wouldn't swap it for a dozen other films. read more...

    Duck, You Sucker! (1971)

It took many years for Sergio Leone's Duck You Sucker, a.k.a. A Fistful of Dynamite (1971) to make its American DVD debut, but it's here at last. Rod Steiger stars as a Mexican bandit, Juan Miranda, who meets up with an Irish explosives expert, John H. Mallory (James Coburn). It's the Mexican Revolution, and one man wishes to help out while the other wishes to help himself. Once again, Leone presents a complex hero and villain who must rely on each other for help. read more...

      Red Road (2007)

Jackie (Kate Dickie) looks a bit like Chrissie Hynde (of the rock group the Pretenders) in a kind of homely/sexy way. She sits gazing into a bank of video monitors. For her job, she watches, godlike, all the people who pass by the myriad of video cameras planted all about Glasgow. If trouble arises, she makes a call and someone (hopefully) shows up on the scene. It seems like the perfect job for her, hovering over other people's lives without the slightest interest in her own. She appears lost, or hollow, and the director Andrea Arnold pulls off the admirable task of making her interesting without immediately giving away her secrets. When those secrets finally come out, they do so in such a way that avoids the obvious "Shyamalan twist." Refreshingly, Red Road is a movie about a person and not a gimmick. read more...

        O (2001)

Tim Blake Nelson's updating of Othello to a high school basketball drama has its interesting points, not least of all the performances by Mekhi Phifer, Julia Stiles, Josh Hartnett and Martin Sheen. Phifer plays Odin, the star player on the high school basketball team, and dating beautiful "Desi" (a.k.a. Desdamona), the dean's daughter. Jealous Hugo (a.k.a. Iago) (Hartnett), the coach's son, begins to plant seeds of jealousy in Odin's head about another player having designs on Desi, leading to tragedy. read more...
