An American Werewolf in London (1981)

After making several hit comedies, John Landis indulged his love for horror with this werewolf movie. Although it features impressive, state-of-the-art visual effects by Rick Baker, the movie is also somewhat tongue-in-cheek. Two hitchhiking Americans, David (David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne) wind up lost in the moors. They find a pub, "The Slaughtered Lamb," but decide that the patrons are not very friendly and -- after some warnings -- they head out again. A creature attacks them: Jack is killed and David goes to the hospital. After a series of disturbing nightmares and a visit from a dead (and decaying) Jack, David learns that he's going to turn into a werewolf himself at the next full moon. The only option is to kill himself, except that he's fallen in love with a pretty nurse (Jenny Agutter). read more...

The Fly (1986)

Director David Cronenberg has always been fascinated with the changing of the human body in all its forms -- mutation, drug addiction, etc. -- and the horror and revulsion that naturally results. In other words, he is able to exploit natural fears through supernatural means. The re-working of the 1958 horror classic The Fly gave him fertile ground to explore this theme. read more...

With a glut of zombie movies on the market, this one, based on a novel by Mike Carey, at least tinkers with some fresh ideas, and, like the best zombie movies, its strengths are based on human themes. read more...

Werewolf Woman (1976)

Rino Di Silvestro's Werewolf Woman (1976) is an amazing movie, but not by any normal standards. It's amazing for its peculiar imagination, for its confident disregard for common sense, and for the courage of its convictions. The movie starts with a sequence involving a werewolf woman. It's nighttime, she's covered with hair and bounds around in the woods tearing people apart. But it turns out that she's not an actual werewolf. She just thinks she is (and, apparently, one of her ancestors was a lycanthrope). So every 30 days when the moon cycles and turns full, she gets homicidal tendencies. read more...
