Shutter Island (2010)

Directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese and adapted from a novel by Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone), Shutter Island is a great looking, highly stylized, very intense thriller in the vein of Scorsese's earlier Cape Fear (1991). read more...

The Call (2013)

This high-concept thriller has the potential to self-destruct, especially when it dives into totally implausible territory during its final stretch. But genre specialist Brad Anderson (Session 9, The Machinist, Transsiberian) gives it a taut, low-budget energy that keeps it pulsing throughout its entire running time. It helps that both Halle Berry and Abigail Breslin give tense, emotionally raw performances, inviting the viewer to care about their characters. read more...

Tombstone (1993)

Directed by George Pan Cosmatos (Rambo: First Blood Part II), Tombstone had an inauspicious start when it was released to theaters without press screenings. Before long, however, fans were cheering over the terrific performances by Kurt Russell and especially Val Kilmer as the cool, verbose Doc Holliday, and though this wasn't enough to make the movie a hit, it has gained a solid fan following over the years. Many viewers generally prefer it to the much higher-profile Wyatt Earp (1994), released six months later. read more...

12 Monkeys (1995)

Word on the street is that it really helps to see 12 Monkeys twice. I've only seen it once, but I believe that I picked up enough to recommend it. Director Terry Gilliam was the American member of the British comedy sensation Monty Python and went on to direct the movies Time Bandits, Brazil, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and The Fisher King. People familiar with Gilliam know they're at least going to get an imaginitave movie. read more...

Non-Stop (2014)

Non-Stop takes two old reliables and puts them in the same movie. First, we have the Die Hard formula, wherein the hero is stuck within a confined space -- like an airplane -- overcoming ever-worsening obstacles and trying to outwit the bad guy's carefully laid evil plans. read more...
