Superman II (1981)

Director Richard Donner shot most of Superman II concurrently with the original Superman (1978). After completing the first movie, he was fired and a totally different director was brought in to finish. Donner was a reliable maker of Hollywood action movies, while Richard Lester was an American expatriate living in England, and part of that country's 1960s New Wave, making scrappy, jumpy black-and-white low budget films with a "mod" touch (like A Hard Day's Night and Petulia). Of course, Lester hated most of what Donner had shot, and re-shot about half of it. read more...

Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut (2006)

If the Internet is good for anything, it's good for a rallying cry. Like an instantaneous version of a petition or a letter-writing campaign, it lets the powers-that-be know what we want and how we want it. Back in the late 1970s, director Richard Donner shot all the footage needed for his film Superman (1978), as well as reams of footage that would have been used for Superman II. But Warner Brothers panicked over the escalating budget (more than $50 million, which is nothing compared to the estimated $300 million spent on Superman Returns), and fired Donner. read more...

Spy Kids (2001)

Cool writer/director Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi) has re-invented himself as a dad, and as a side effect of fatherhood, he has now made the coolest kid flick in ages. It doesn't reach the artistry of the Babe movies, but it's done with flair and wit instead of talking down to the audience or marketing toys at them. read more...

The Incredibles (2004)

Of late, animated family films have begun to lose their luster. Unable to understand what appeals to today's children, studios pump them up with toilet jokes and pop culture references, machine-gunned at a conveyor belt pace (see Shark Tale). Worse, the studios are blaming their failure on old-fashioned musical numbers and hand-drawn animation without bothering to notice the enduring success of films like Beauty and the Beast and Spirited Away. Fortunately, certain animators still have a sense of pride. Brad Bird, who directed one of the best early "Simpsons" episodes (Krusty Gets Busted) as well as the extraordinary 1999 feature film The Iron Giant, returns with The Incredibles, a film so miraculous and so far above its competitors that the Academy Award for Animated Feature Film is no longer a contest. read more...

Tarzan (1999)

Although it sticks strictly to the decades-old Disney formula, Tarzan is anexciting, accomplished work that ranks with the wonderful Johnny Weissmullermovies like Tarzan and His Mate (1934). Tony Goldwyn is the voice of the apeman, who not only swings on vines, but slides on tree moss. Minnie Driver playsJane, and Glenn Close, Lance Henriksen, and Nigel Hawthorne provide other voices.Even the "sidekick" character played by Rosie O'Donnell and the music by PhilCollins don't deflate the picture. Tarzan is great fun. read more...
