    The Caveman's Valentine (2001)

In one of his finest performances, Samuel L. Jackson howls and stomps his way through this new film by director Kasi Lemmons, her follow-up to the great Eve's Bayou (1997). Jackson plays the "Caveman," a.k.a. Romulus Ledbetter, a former classically-trained concert pianist now turned crazy homeless guy who lives in a cave in Central Park (he gets messages from Moth Seraphs in his head). When he finds the frozen corpse of a friend in a nearby tree, Romulus takes on the case, doing some pretty slick detective work for a crazy guy. The script, adapted by George Dawes Green from his own book, asks us to suspend quite a lot in the way of logic, but Lemmons brings a lovely "magical realism" to the film and we're carried away. Anthony Michael Hall and Ann Magnuson also star. read more...

      Happy-Go-Lucky (2008)

The great British director Mike Leigh has always been at his best with the darkest material; most aficionados would agree that his greatest film to date is the very grim Naked (1993). Even his lightest films, like Life Is Sweet (1991) and Topsy-Turvy (1999) tend to wallow in gloominess. When I heard that the new Leigh film was called Happy-Go-Lucky, I had to laugh. Just imagine how miserable this one would be! But what I actually saw was a huge surprise; not only is it one of the year's best films, but also it's a film so joyous and uplifting that you just want to pluck it off the screen, put it in your pocket and carry it around with you. read more...

        Hereafter (2010)

If I say that Clint Eastwood's Hereafter is one of the best films of 2010, it may conjure up images of the film critic as a dreamy crackpot, grinning and believing in a gooey, joyous afterlife and cooing "don't worry, be happy." Let me tell you right up front that I have no opinion about the afterlife, and it seems to me that Eastwood does not either. Though the movie deals with death and the possibility of something beyond death, it's firmly rooted in the problems and emotions of three characters that are very much alive. And in telling these stories, Eastwood shows off filmmaking so fluid and skilled that it makes you weep with joy. read more...

        The Endless (2018)

The chilling, mysterious The Endless (2017) is a true low-budget discovery, with enough ideas and surprises for many movies. Co-directed by Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson, and written by Benson, the movie introduces two brothers, Aaron and Justin (played by the filmmakers), who were raised in a commune, but escaped. Justin, the eldest, believes that it was run by an evil cult and that they're better off where they are, living in civilization and eating cups-o-noodles. But Aaron remembers all of it fondly, and misses it. When they receive a strange videotape indicating that their former friends are still alive, Aaron wants to visit. Justin warily agrees, and as the visit becomes longer and longer, the brothers discover many weird, disturbing secrets, and even more questions, such as: what's the reason behind the double moons? Moorhead and Benson get multitudes from their cast, their effortless FX, and simple locations, and it will surely leave heads spinning. read more...
