Man of the West (1958)

With this film, the great American director Anthony Mann simultaneously left the third stage of his career and entered the fourth; he went from unremarkable B-films, to film noir, to Westerns and finally to epics. Man of the West is a combination of the James Stewart Westerns that came before it and the epic ideas that would drive his final few films. read more...

Hunter Killer (2018)

This military thriller starts stiffly, and not everyone seems fully committed, but as it gets going and the pieces come together, it becomes a passably tense entertainment for fans of huge explosions. read more...

The Death Kiss (1932)

The Death Kiss was released a year after Tod Browning's Dracula and featured three of the stars from that hit, including Dracula himself, Bela Lugosi. But it's not a horror film, and Lugosi has a relatively small part. It wouldn't be surprising if anyone who saw The Death Kiss, even today, would be disappointed. But the good news is that it's a really cool, very interesting murder mystery. read more...

The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959)

This is my favorite of the movies adapted from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel, and the first one in color. It's also one of the best movies to come from the beloved Hammer Studios' horror line. Peter Cushing makes a great Sherlock Holmes, and even looks like the character; it's a role he was born to play. Christopher Lee plays Sir Henry Baskerville, leaving André Morell in the role of Doctor Watson. The plot, of course, has Holmes investigating the legend of a murderous hellhound on the moors. Terence Fisher, the most beloved of the Hammer horror directors, is at the helm. read more...
