Another 48 Hrs. (1990)

Here's a strange case of expectations vs. reality. Eddie Murphy became a huge star with his acting debut in Walter Hill's 48 Hrs. (1982). By the time this sequel was ordered, he was an established star, and certain things were expected in an Eddie Murphy movie. However, the cult director Walter Hill also operated in a certain way, and what actually arrived in theaters was more of a Walter Hill movie than an Eddie Murphy movie, i.e. it was more of an action/crime movie than a comedy full of Murphy's wisecracking. Hence, most people were disappointed and branded Another 48 Hrs. a failure. read more...

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)

At the time, it looked as if Guy Ritchie were yet another opportunist cashing in on the Quentin Tarantino fever of the 1990s (and indeed, Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction were even more popular in Ritchie's home of England than they were in America). But in retrospect, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is an energetic, clever crime movie that looks into various little pockets of underworld life: sex, gambling, drugs, and hired thugs and uses them all against one another. read more...

The A-Team (2010)

Carnahan and co-writers Brian Bloom and Skip Wood have succumbed to the urge to create an origin for this super team, but they happily confine it to a pre-credits sequence. (It contains the source of B.A. Baracus's fear of flying.) Basically, four ex-Army Rangers find themselves working together as a kind of under-the-radar military team, the kind that gets things done when too much red tape gets in the way. Col. Hannibal Smith (Liam Neeson) is the gray-haired, cigar-chomping leader; Carnahan snatches his signature line from the TV show, "I love it when a plan comes together," and takes it seriously. Hannibal now talks about "plans" in just about every other line of dialogue. read more...

Red (2010)

In an industry, and in fact a country, that only appreciates youth, it's nice to see a movie about "old" people. Thankfully Robert Schwentke's Red gives us that, but without the requisite cutesy factor, as if to ask, "isn't it remarkable how these old folks can do things just like young people?" Here we have Bruce Willis (age 55), John Malkovich (age 56), Helen Mirren (age 65), and Morgan Freeman (age 73), plus the 46 year-old Spring chicken Mary-Louise Parker, ripping it up and having a great time, and it feels right. There's some discussion of (and jokes about) age from time to time, but the overall feeling is, why not? read more...
