Ugetsu (1953)

American audiences had little use for Japanese cinema during the 1940s, and that's understandable, given the circumstances. But in 1951, everything changed when a little film called Rashomon rolled into American theaters. It was so beautiful and so startling in so many ways that it ushered in a brief "Japanese New Wave." read more...

Night and Fog (1955)

Filmed just ten years after the end of WWII, this 32-minute film tells the story of the Nazi concentration camps with the most cutting, painful urgency of any film. Director Alain Resnais used stills, archive footage and new footage of the deserted camps and combined it with a brilliant score by Hanns Eisler and narration written by Jean Cayrol, who survived such a camp. Absolutely one of the most important historical documents ever made. read more...

The House I Live In (2012)

Noted documentary filmmaker Eugene Jarecki, brother of filmmakers Andrew (Capturing the Friedmans) and Nicholas (Arbitrage), goes about his bold The House I Live In in just the right way. He begins it with a personal touch, an interview with his family's former housekeeper, Nannie Jeter (that's her real name). Her responses inspire Jarecki to look further into the "War on Drugs," its history, and its long-term damaging effects on the United States. read more...

Lessons of Darkness (1992)

One of the great documentaries of the 1990s serendipitously returned to the 2000 San Francisco International Film Festival, finally giving me a chance to see it. The movie is Lessons of Darkness (1992), and it's directed by Werner Herzog, who was a member of the German New Wave, along with Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Wim Wenders, and it's arguably his best film since perhaps Fitzcarraldo (1982) or even Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972). read more...
