The Dance of Reality (2014)

A month or so ago, I thoroughly enjoyed the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune, which told the story of an extraordinary movie that was never made. As the documentary came to an end, it revealed that Alejandro Jodorowsky had made his first film in 23 years, The Dance of Reality. As I watched that new film, I couldn't help wondering if maybe it, too, had been better left as a myth rather than a completed film. read more...

Endless Poetry (2017)

The Chilean-born cult director Alejandro Jodorowsky follows up his autobiographical The Dance of Reality with another cinematic chapter of his own life story. And for whatever reason -- maybe the story was more compelling, or maybe I was in a better mood, or maybe Jodorowsky became more comfortable behind the camera -- I liked this one, Endless Poetry, a great deal more. read more...

Madeline's Madeline (2018)

Josephine Decker's Madeline's Madeline is done in a kind of hallucinatory fashion, with wandering shots and editing that jumps in and out of scenes that are either dreams or fantasies or illusions. The young star, Helena Howard, clearly has something, and hopefully she can get more strong roles in the future. She's Madeline, a troubled teen girl who is part of an after-school acting class. Her teacher (Molly Parker) encourages her to dig deeper in her exercises, mainly pretending to be animals. Her mother (Miranda July) is exasperated at her strange behavior. Things just seem to meander through a series of actors doing acting exercises until we're not sure whether or not Madeline is insane. Many have admired it, but I'm afraid it just didn't really work for me. read more...

El Topo (1970)

Alejandro Jodorowsky's most famous film, El Topo, begins as a gunfighter, El Topo (Jodorowsky), and his naked son (Jodorowsky's son Brontis) ride across the desert. They come across a town full of corpses, and El Topo meets a woman whom he names Mara (Mara Lorenzio). She challenges him to defeat the four top gunfighters in the desert, which he does, though not without trouble and a bit of cheating. (A mysterious woman in black, played by Paula Romo, shows up at this point.) The two women leave El Topo wounded, and he wakes up twenty years later, having been cared for by a band of cave-dwelling little people. He vows to liberate them by digging a tunnel that leads to the outside world. (The title, "El Topo," means "the mole.") read more...

The Forbidden Room (2015)

Guy Maddin's The Forbidden Room is one of his best-looking films, incorporating bold imitations of the old two-strip Technicolor, but it's also one of his most baffling. It includes more than a dozen storylines, some built within the confines of others, and some just little jokey asides. It has been described as a Russian nesting doll of a movie, except that it doesn't really have a center... it just wanders. It can be mesmerizing for short bursts, but the overall haul -- two full hours -- asks a lot of a viewer. Some of the stories include a submarine crew running out of air, a lumberjack hunting for a missing girl, vampires called "aswang," a mustache that has come back to life, and a man teaching us how to take a bath. As usual, Maddin carefully makes each frame look like a battered old silent film, with jumps and scratches; there is some dialogue, but there are more titles. Maddin assembles an impressive cast, however, with Mathieu Amalric, Geraldine Chaplin, Charlotte Rampling, Maria de Medeiros, Udo Kier, Caroline Dhavernas, and others showing up for a scene, a few shots, or just a single splash. read more...
