Femme Fatale (2002)

Brian De Palma returns in full delirious style with his best movie since Scarface, though its jarring ending has polarized critics and audiences. Still, no filmmaker alive can craft a movie with such potent, palpable style -- silent sequences, cross-cutting, split screen. And De Palma is still one of the most personal filmmakers out there, airing his demented need for voyeurism and duality in every film. Rebecca Romijn-Stamos plays De Palma's most interesting female character, ever, as a master thief who steals a collection of diamonds during the Cannes Film Festival, switches lives with a lookalike in Paris and tries to disappear with the aid of photographer Antonio Banderas. read more...

The Tiger of Eschnapur (1959)

Fritz Lang's penultimate "Indian Epic," is a perfect bookend to his Dr. Mabuse series. Known individually as The Tiger of Eschnapur and The Indian Tomb, these films were once the most difficult to see of Lang's films (they were once distilled into a single 90 minute film), and now here they are in unbelievably gorgeous digital restorations with dazzling Technicolor and clear sound on both German and English language soundtracks. read more...

Heroes of the East (1979)

If King Hu's Come Drink with Me seemed like a breakthrough with its tough girl hero, just get a look at this culturally sensitive film filled with dazzling battle sequences -- and no casualties. Les Vampires (1915)

Reporter Philippe Guerande (Edouard Mathe) vows to track down and uncover the secret crime ring known as the 'Vampires,' (not the Bram Stoker version -- just plain old, ordinary super-criminals). The dangerous, alluring Irma Vep (Musidora) -- wearing an all-black body suit -- is the gang's spiritual leader, and eventually its actual leader. Bald, goofball Marcel Levesque provides comic relief, as well as a kind of heroic warmth, as the reporter's sidekick. read more...
