    The Embalmer (2002)

It can be awfully tough to follow a hero who stumbles blindly through a dangerous story when the obvious pitfalls set off alarm bells for the rest of us. Who can identify with such a dunce? While visiting the zoo, handsome Valerio (Valerio Foglia Manzillo) meets a crazy old pint-sized taxidermist, Peppino (Ernesto Mahieux), and quits his job to become an apprentice. But when Valerio meets the gorgeous Deborah (Elisabetta Rocchetti), Peppino gets deadly jealous. Director Matteo Garrone and cinematographer Marco Onorato use dramatic shadows to cook up some memorable images -- most notably that strung-up cow on the film's poster -- but this story is far too transparent to hold our attention for long. read more...

The Merchant of Four Seasons (1972)

In Rainer Werner Fassbinder's The Merchant of Four Seasons a former fruit peddler Hans (Hans Hirschmüller), unable to continue in his work, attempts to build a business for himself and his wife (Irm Hermann), whom he barely cares about. The soul-sucking nature of capitalism drives this brilliant film, but the rich characters and the almost constant tension keep it emotionally resonant. Filmmaker Wim Wenders provides a commentary track for this excellent new DVD. A Criterion Blu-ray followed in 2015. read more...

        About Elly (2015)

I know I'm being difficult, but I just can't help being annoyed that someone as brilliant as Jafar Panahi is under house arrest and banned from making films, and that the less interesting Asghar Farhadi gets full support and international distribution. It's not that Farhadi is a bad filmmaker. My favorite of his films is Fireworks Wednesday (2006), and certainly the Oscar-winning A Separation (2011) has its strong points, as does The Past (2013). But he's basically Salieri to Panahi's Mozart; he's the official, court-sanctioned filmmaker, while the true talent is kept in the margins. Time will sort things out, certainly, but right now, no one seems to notice the difference. read more...

          A Separation (2011)

Longtime and loyal readers know that I am a fan of Iranian cinema. I saw my first Iranian film, Gabbeh, back in 1997 and I have been seen some 50 of them since then; in a culture of repression and censorship, certain filmmakers have found amazing ways to express personal and poetic visions. I'm always happy when one of these films goes beyond a small circle of cinephiles. For example, the great director Abbas Kiarostami's latest film, Certified Copy, recently won the Best Foreign Language Film award from my group, the San Francisco Film Critic's Circle. (Although, to be fair, it was not made in Iran.) read more...

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)

So sharply written that it cuts, this third movie by the award-winning playwright Martin McDonagh is a comedy-drama that starts with cleverness and wit, then opens up into something truthfully human. read more...
