Unforgettable (1996)

In 1994, John Dahl had a good year. His Red Rock West was rescued from obscurity and became a theatrical hit, thanks to San Francisco's Roxie Releasing, and his The Last Seduction opened to enthusiastic praise, with discussion of an Oscar nomination for its incredible star, Linda Fiorentino. (She was unfortunately disqualified, since the movie had played on cable.) Dahl probably had his choice of scripts for a follow-up, and it was only natural that just about everyone was disappointed by Unforgettable. It's a oddball movie, to be sure, but with a little perspective, and knowing Dahl's touch for film noir, it becomes an interesting and welcome item in his filmography; it's certainly less of a black sheep than The Great Raid. read more...

Chi-Raq (2015)

Is there another filmmaker so outspoken and passionate, so foolhardy and ferociously talented as Spike Lee? A look through his filmography can make one feel unwell, especially his more recent efforts (Oldboy, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus) but his fervent new Chi-Raq recalls, in some ways, his earlier work. read more...

    Black Caesar (1973)

One of the essential "blaxploitation" movies of the 1970s, Black Caesar was written and directed by a white man, the prolific Larry Cohen, although it was also based on a white movie, the gangster classic Little Caesar (1930). Fred Williamson plays the title character, actually named Tommy Gibbs, who started life as a shoeshine boy, beat up by a racist cop. As an adult, he takes on the local Italian gangsters in New York — he visits a mafioso in a restaurant and drops a severed ear in a plate of spaghetti — and becomes a powerful crime lord. But of course, his downfall is imminent. Cohen provides some reverse-racial commentary that's interesting, if crude; the hero's mom works as a maid, and he tries to "free" her with his money, but her reaction is not what he expects. The best part of all this is James Brown's funky songs and score, including tracks like "Down and Out in New York City" and "The Boss," as well as the weirdly haunting "Mama's Dead." Tommy was so popular he was brought back for a sequel, Hell Up in Harlem. Olive Films released the Blu-ray in 2015. read more...

    Filth (2014)

Adapted from a novel by Irvine Welsh, Filth belongs to a subgenre that pushes the limits of acceptable characters. In The Wolf of Wall Street, and Dom Hemingway, they indulge in debauchery of every kind, which can sometimes provide vicarious fun for a viewer, and is certainly great fun for an actor. Here, James McAvoy gives it his all, fearless, energetic, and lunatic. (He begins by snatching a child's balloon and firing off two middle finger gestures.) read more...

In the Mouth of Madness (1995)

Horror films are no longer what they used to be, but John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness is a real, honest-to-goodness horror film, not a gore film or a goofy comedy. (It has a little gore, but the true emphasis is on being scared.) I watched In the Mouth of Madness late at night, with the lights off and alone, and it was kinda scary and I had a great time. read more...
