The Captain's Paradise (1953)

In Anthony Kimmins' The Captain's Paradise (1953), Alec Guinness plays a captain who commands a ferryboat between Gibraltar and Tangier. He keeps a girl in each port: one is a fiery, sexy party girl who can dance but can't cook (Yvonne De Carlo), and the other is a homebody who fetches the captain's slippers and puts him to bed by 10 p.m. (Celia Johnson). The captain has supposedly found the key to paradise with this situation, but of course, there's a twist. This is arguably the least of the Ealing Studios/Alec Guinness films I've seen, largely due to second-tier work by director Kimmins, but it's still filled with amusing stuff. It was released in the Alec Guinness 5-Film Collection DVD box set, which was released in 2002 by Anchor Bay, and then re-packaged by Lionsgate in 2009. Now Kino Lorber has the titles, and The Captain's Paradise has been released along with Barnacle Bill (1957) on a 2020 Blu-ray edition. The transfer on The Captain's Paradise isn't quite as strong as Barnacle Bill's; it's softer, and with less contrast, but still worth seeing. The disc comes with optional subtitles for both movies, and trailers for four Ealing/Guinness movies. read more...

Dogma (1999)

Writer/director Kevin Smith's new movie Dogma is bound to offend some people, and he knows it. That's why he opens up with a very funny disclaimer. But of course, the people who will be most offended by Dogma won't even see the movie, so the disclaimer is useless. read more...

The Hunt (2020)

Insanely gory, but also fiendishly funny, this clever dark satire takes an old, familiar scenario and uses it to boldly skewer both red and blue Americans, painting both behaviors as equally absurd. read more...

The Young Ones (1982)

This hilarious show came to the US via MTV in the early 80s, and introduced viewers to an entirely new level of laughter. Sharing a house, four poor, rude, stupid British college students -- punk Vyvyan (Adrian Edmondson), uptight Rick (Rik Mayall), hippie Neil (Nigel Planer), and leader Mike (Christopher Ryan) -- bicker with each other. Alexei Sayle is a frequent co-star. Occasionally a cool band -- like Madness or Motorhead -- comes to play. This essential box set contains an earlier version of the series, which aired on the BBC in 1982, and to my knowledge, never hit American airwaves. The three-disc box set (1982-84, BBC/Warners, $59.98) contains 12 episodes, featurettes and other extras. Look for Emma Thompson, Robbie Coltrane, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders in small roles. read more...

Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949)

Ealing Studios was originally established to represent the best and most upright of British values. When that led to a series of boring, financially disastrous films, they tried comedies about characters with low moral fiber and came up with a series of classics that endures to this day. Those classic titles included Charles Crichton's Hue and Cry (1947) and The Lavender Hill Mob (1951), and Alexander Mackendrick's Whisky Galore! (1949), The Man in the White Suit (1951) and The Ladykillers (1955), the latter remade in 2004 by the Coen Brothers. For the record, the studio also made the masterful episodic horror film, Dead of Night (1945) that is still a beloved cult classic. But easily the most beloved and durable film from the Ealing stable is Robert Hamer's Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949). read more...
