Leave Her to Heaven (1945)

Gene Tierney received her only Oscar nomination for her role in Leave Her to Heaven, as a psychotically jealous beauty bent on destroying the men in her life. Directed by John M. Stahl, the film is notable for its exquisite Technicolor cinematography, used in direct contrast to the story's dark, noirish qualities. As Ellen, Tierney makes a striking entrance, gazing with fixed intensity at writer Richard Harland (Cornel Wilde) on a train. They eventually marry, but Ellen becomes jealous of Richard's invalid brother (Darryl Hickman). Vincent Price co-stars -- in a role similar to the one he played in Laura -- as Tierney's jilted former lover. read more...

The Two Faces of January (2014)

Author Patricia Highsmith's books have made some very good films, including Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train (1951), Rene Clement's Purple Noon (1960), Wim Wenders' The American Friend (1977), Claude Chabrol's The Cry of the Owl (1987), and Liliana Cavani's Ripley's Game (2002). By far the most popular one, though, is Anthony Minghella's The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), which is also the weakest of the batch. Now comes Hossein Amini's The Two Faces of January, which clearly comes closer to the Minghella film than to the others, probably for commercial reasons, but also likely because the late Minghella's estate was crucial in getting the movie made. read more...

Red Rock West (1992)

Red Rock West was an exciting event for us San Franciscans, because our Roxie Cinema was solely responsible for its success. The movie, made in 1992 and starring Dennis Hopper, Nicolas Cage and Lara Flynn Boyle had already gone straight to video when the Roxie began playing it in an unlimited run in 1994. It was so successful that other theaters picked it up too. It's a brilliant movie that seems to understand the inner workings of film noir, rather than just paying tribute to it. Cage plays a man looking for a job, who is mistaken for a hitman. He visits his supposed target (Boyle), but finds himself attracted to her instead. To complicate matters, the real hitman (Hopper) also turns up. J.T. Walsh plays the man who wants his wife whacked. Dahl's equally good The Last Seduction was rescued from cable and released in theaters later that same year. read more...

A Most Violent Year (2014)

Plenty of today's filmmakers are in awe of the American movie renaissance of the 1970s, a period that began roughly at the end of the 1960s, with Bonnie and Clyde and Easy Rider, and ended at the end of the 1970s, with Star Wars and Raging Bull. It was a time that older studio executives conceded that they didn't know what they were doing, realized that the youth market was the way to go, and hired fresh, young directors (Scorsese, Schrader, Coppola, De Palma, Bogdanovich, Spielberg, Lucas, Friedkin, Malick, Altman, etc.) to do their thing. These directors had plenty of control and could take plenty of risks. Movies tended to be gritty and character-driven, and even allowed for certain experimentation. read more...
