Sullivan's Travels (1941)

Forgotten for years along with its maker, writer/director Preston Sturges, Sullivan's Travels has only in the past couple of decades enjoyed a comeback and induction into classic status. It actually describes the same conundrum that's still going on in real life; that comedy doesn't get the same respect drama does. In the film, Joel McCrea plays a comic filmmaker who feels guilty about his lightweight pictures and wants to make a serious drama (called O Brother, Where Art Thou?) to capture the hearts of men. read more...

The Lady Eve (1941)

Preston Sturges' The Lady Eve is an all-time classic with sharp-witted con-woman Jean Harrington (Barbara Stanwyck) giving the slightly baffled snake scientist Charles Pike (Henry Fonda) a run for his money. As usual with Sturges, you wonder how he was able to get away with so much innuendo during Hollywood's Hayes Code period. The Criterion Collection's remastered DVD stands up among their best (it contains lots of extras: a commentary track, an introduction by Peter Bogdanovich, the Lux radio play, Edith Head's costume designs, and more). read more...

Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)

Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) is one of Woody Allen's best, and tellingly, one of his few 1980s films to be set in the present day (a strong nostalgia runs through these years). read more...

Ninotchka (1939)

This highly enjoyable comedy -- one of the greatest ever made -- actually comes about despite three incredible talents working against each other. Greta Garbo stars as Ninotchka, a Russian Agent who comes to Paris to supervise the sale of priceless jewels. Her comrades have been sent before her and have proved susceptible to the temptations of Paris. Ninotchka is not so easy. read more...

The Band Wagon (1953)

The vibrantly talented but viciously uneven director Vincente Minnelli turned in his most streamlined and cohesive film with The Band Wagon, starring Fred Astaire as Tony Hunter, a washed-up movie star hoping for a comeback on Broadway. His married playwright pals (played by Oscar Levant and Nanette Fabray, no doubt inspired by the husband-and-wife screenwriters Betty Comden and Adolph Green) write a comedy for him, and ballet star Gaby (Cyd Charisse) signs on, but egotistical director Jeffrey Cordova (Jack Buchanan) turns it into a pretentious Faust adaptation. read more...
