Aliens (1986)

Everything a sequel should be, James Cameron's slam-bang Aliens went in an entirely different direction from Ridley Scott's moody 1979 chamber piece, Alien, with an amazingly simple idea: more aliens. read more...

The Walking Dead (TV Series) (2010)

Created by Frank Darabont, based on graphic novels by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard, the AMC TV series "The Walking Dead" remembers one of the most elemental ideas about zombie movies: it's not about the zombies. With Night of the Living Dead (1968), George A. Romero invented the modern zombie, but also managed to use the zombies only as dressing for a story about humans, and the volatile relationships between them. "The Walking Dead" doesn't have any real issues to deal with; it mostly wants to "hook" viewers into watching the next episode, and so it plays a bit more like "Lost" than like anything Romero might have dreamed of. But thankfully, it's a bit less hysterical than "Lost" and it works. read more...

Alien: Resurrection (1997)

French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet brought his dark, cartoonish brand of kinetic filmmaking to the fourth movie in the Alien series. This movie resurrects Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) 200 years after the previous film and teams her up with a new band of misfits (Winona Ryder and Ron Perlman among them) against the alien. Alien Resurrection (1997) was even more despised than Alien 3, but again, it has some incredible moments and a unique flow; it's definitely of a piece with the others. Joss Whedon provided the lively screenplay. Dan Hedaya and Brad Dourif co-star. A slightly longer cut was assembled for a 2003 DVD release. read more...

Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013)

Texas Chainsaw 3D begins with some good ideas, such as following immediately on the trail of the original classic, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), and introducing the main character as Leatherface's cousin. The movie touches slightly on the idea of families looking out for one another, which makes for an interesting dynamic toward the end. Unfortunately, the bulk of the movie is just another slasher, albeit a non-supernatural one. read more...
