Holiday (1938)

This is my favorite George Cukor movie, and a perennial New Year's Eve classic. It's quite a bit more fine-tuned and delicate than other, more popular Cukor hits, and it offers a kind of anti-It's a Wonderful Life sentiment. In this one, the hero, Johnny Case (Cary Grant) wishes to drop out of society and go exploring -- a theme that would become more popular decades later -- and no family obligations will hold him back. Johnny wants to marry Julia Seton (Doris Nolan) but her rich family would rather he take a job before gallivanting off. Fortunately, her sister Linda (Katharine Hepburn) is a good deal more open-minded. A good chunk of the film takes place during a New Year's Eve party (in a playroom), at which Johnny slowly makes the transition from his interest in the bad sister to the good sister. Cukor ventures close to Lubitsch territory in his gentle balance of comedy and pathos. Lew Ayres turns in a terrific performance as the sisters' drunken brother, and the great fusspot Edward Everett Horton plays Johnny's best friend, a professor (with Jean Dixon as the professor's wife). Hepburn and Grant made Bringing Up Baby the same year and both films flopped. read more...

An American in Paris (1951)

An American in Paris (1951) won an Oscar for Best Picture and was chosen for the American Film Institute's Top 100 American Films of All Time (#68). But despite these accolades, it's a movie that will forever be in the shadow of Singin' in the Rain (1952). Of the many films Gene Kelly made in his career, it's these two that are the best remembered and most beloved. But always Singin', #1 and American, #2. read more...

Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)

This massive word-of-mouth hit comes from the pen of talented screenwriter Richard Curtis. Over the five sections of the film, we get to know Charles (Hugh Grant), his sister Scarlett (Charlotte Coleman) and their large group of friends. At wedding #1, Charles meets an American, Carrie (Andie MacDowell), and immediately falls for her. His fantasy love is juxtaposed by the real relationships around him, failed, unrequited, mismatched and otherwise, but director Mike Newell plays up the story's charm, making it more easily palatable. Likewise, Newell and MacDowell never seem to connect; her performance comes across as rather wooden, though she and Grant still share a delightful chemistry. The colorful cast brings it all home, and the film has become something of a minor classic in its genre. Rowan Atkinson has a very funny bit as a nervous reverend at one of the weddings. read more...

Top Hat (1935)

According to legend, when Fred Astaire first auditioned for the movies, someone scrawled the following note: "can't sing, can't act, slightly balding, can dance a little." Of course, he went on to change the Hollywood musical forever, with his unassuming charisma, his light frame and his insistence on a certain kind of choreography. He shot each dance sequence, from head to foot, in its entirety, without cutting. That was a unique idea back then, but in today's world of music videos and Moulin Rouge, it's positively outrageous. read more...

Trouble in Paradise (1932)

If there were any justice, Trouble in Paradise would be mentioned in the same breath with Some Like It Hot, and indeed, even Citizen Kane. But it's not, and that's because hardly anyone has seen it. It's not available on video (except in an expensive and out-of-print laserdisc box set) and it's rarely screened. But now the good folks at Universal, who now own much of Paramount's old product, have agreed to show their archive print at the Roxie for a week. All fans of romantic comedies, or even fans of great filmmaking, need to see this movie. read more...
