The Mask (1994)

I'm about to heap some high praise on Jim Carrey, but please bear with me. In The Mask, Carrey invites comparison to Fred Astaire, Jackie Chan, and Charlie Chaplin. He is so good in this role, that we can't tell where Carrey ends and the special effects begin. This is the perfect movie for him. The biggest drawback with The Mask is that the rest of the movie isn't as big or as exciting as Carrey is. In Astaire, Chan and Chaplin movies, everyone else around the star directly compliments that star, whether as a good guy or a bad guy. In The Mask, the bad guys are just bad. We have no idea who they are and we don't care about them. We just want to count the minutes until they're defeated. Meanwhile, the talented Peter Riegert is wasted as a bumbling cop. On the other hand, Cameron Diaz, in her first movie, is quite beautiful and compelling. It's not often anymore that a studio will take a chance on an unknown. She adds a nice dimension to the standard piece-of-meat character. She has a very good presence. The movie loses sparkle when Diaz is not on screen, and it loses its punch when the Mask is not on screen, but when the movie works, it's magic. read more...

Red (2010)

In an industry, and in fact a country, that only appreciates youth, it's nice to see a movie about "old" people. Thankfully Robert Schwentke's Red gives us that, but without the requisite cutesy factor, as if to ask, "isn't it remarkable how these old folks can do things just like young people?" Here we have Bruce Willis (age 55), John Malkovich (age 56), Helen Mirren (age 65), and Morgan Freeman (age 73), plus the 46 year-old Spring chicken Mary-Louise Parker, ripping it up and having a great time, and it feels right. There's some discussion of (and jokes about) age from time to time, but the overall feeling is, why not? read more...

The Predator (2018)

Shane Black's The Predator is probably not what anyone expected from a new Predator movie. It's very fast, very funny, and, as with all of Black's previous works, it gleefully embraces genre cliches and turns them sideways. read more...

Red 2 (2013)

As directed by Dean Parisot, whose last feature was the dreadful Fun with Dick and Jane remake, Red 2 -- the sequel to Red (2010) -- is like a tortoise and hare race played out with a hundred hares on a dodgeball court that ends in a tie. Parisot, or whatever office intern was allowed to do re-shoots, keeps the plot moving quickly, jumping all over the world (complete with major city title cards), to cover up its general nothingness. read more...

The A-Team (2010)

Carnahan and co-writers Brian Bloom and Skip Wood have succumbed to the urge to create an origin for this super team, but they happily confine it to a pre-credits sequence. (It contains the source of B.A. Baracus's fear of flying.) Basically, four ex-Army Rangers find themselves working together as a kind of under-the-radar military team, the kind that gets things done when too much red tape gets in the way. Col. Hannibal Smith (Liam Neeson) is the gray-haired, cigar-chomping leader; Carnahan snatches his signature line from the TV show, "I love it when a plan comes together," and takes it seriously. Hannibal now talks about "plans" in just about every other line of dialogue. read more...
