    The Kitchen (2019)

One niggling problem with The Kitchen is that it has a vague title, and it stars Melissa McCarthy and Tiffany Haddish, and so most people will assume it's a comedy — like a comedy about a kitchen or something. It's not. It's a hardcore gangster movie, set in Hell's Kitchen in the gritty 1970s, and based on an eight-issue DC Vertigo comic book series by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle. But the actual problem is that it's not that it's not funny. The actual problem is that it's not very good. It feels chopped up and compressed, leaping from one grisly killing to the next without much in-between. The characters leap along with the scenes, and it's difficult to get to know them, or to care. read more...

      The Quarry (2020)

A dusty, rural crime story, this slow-paced drama doesn't dig very deep, but the sun-baked, wind-blown setting, and the nuanced performances by its two gifted lead actors, make it well worth a look. read more...

        Appointment with Danger (1951)

Olive Films has happily ended up with a whole bunch of Paramount's back catalog titles, and even if none of them (so far) are terribly major films, it's good to have them around. read more...

          The Missouri Breaks (1976)

The Missouri Breaks seems like something worked out in the mind of a studio executive, hiring two recent Best Actor Oscar winners and box office champs, Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson, as well as director Arthur Penn, who had helped re-shape the entire movie business years earlier with Bonnie and Clyde. When it finally arrived, it was critically panned and a financial flop. Now, however, it looks quite a bit more interesting, with its odd, laggy rhythms and weird touches. read more...

            The Specialists (1969)

I love Sergio Corbucci's Westerns, and I'm usually willing to make some concessions, but something about The Specialists just doesn't quite work. It could be that French star Johnny Halliday just isn't very interesting, at least as a gunslinger. Or it could be those weird hippie characters that just don't seem to fit. It could be the lack of an Ennio Morricone score. Or it could be the way that the simple revenge story — Halliday plays a man named Hud who wishes to avenge the wrongful death of his brother — seems to continually wander off track. Even the title doesn't seem to apply the story. It still has some strong imagery — such as the one-handed villain "El Diablo," or the naked people crawling up the street — and for completists, it will be worth seeing. But beginners should start elsewhere. Kino Lorber released it on Blu-ray for 2020. It comes with an Alex Cox commentary track, and even he seems to be trying very hard to find worthwhile things to talk about. The disc also includes trailers. read more...
