    Appointment with Danger (1951)

Olive Films has happily ended up with a whole bunch of Paramount's back catalog titles, and even if none of them (so far) are terribly major films, it's good to have them around. read more...

      The Missouri Breaks (1976)

The Missouri Breaks seems like something worked out in the mind of a studio executive, hiring two recent Best Actor Oscar winners and box office champs, Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson, as well as director Arthur Penn, who had helped re-shape the entire movie business years earlier with Bonnie and Clyde. When it finally arrived, it was critically panned and a financial flop. Now, however, it looks quite a bit more interesting, with its odd, laggy rhythms and weird touches. read more...

        Widows (2018)

The idea of the ultra highbrow arthouse award-winner Steve McQueen relaxing a bit and directing a crime-pulp story — co-written by Gillian Flynn no less — is wonderfully appealing. But the result is less satisfying that one might have hoped. McQueen seems unable to lighten up, and his rigorous direction never lets the material come to life; there's little fun to be had. He has assembled an impressive cast, but, if memory serves, not one of them ever cracks even the tiniest smile. So when the widows of the title are suddenly expected to step up and do cool things like analyze blueprints and arrange for getaway vehicles, there's no joy in their new power, or in their embracing of the freedom of a life of crime. They're just as somber as they were when they were married. Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, and Elizabeth Debicki are the widows; their husbands were killed in a heist and now they owe $2 million to a shady politician and his murderous crew, and Cynthia Erivo joins them later. Colin Farrell and Brian Tyree Henry are politicians, Daniel Kaluuya is magnetic and terrifying as a thug, and with Garret Dillahunt, Carrie Coon, Jacki Weaver, Robert Duvall, Liam Neeson, Jon Bernthal, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Lukas Haas, and many more. read more...

The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid (1972)

Philip Kaufman's first Hollywood feature after a pair of low-budget underground films, The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid is less artistic and less psychological than other Westerns of its time; it seems more inspired by M*A*S*H, complete with a comical baseball game as its centerpiece (as well as a would-be drug sequence that somehow cuts short). It builds up to the title "raid," which, without giving anything away, does not go as planned and is accompanied by the unholy squeal of a calliope with a dead man slouched over its keys. Cliff Robertson plays gang leader Cole Younger, rather fascinated by new forms of technology, from a mechanical boxing game to a trackless train. ("Ain't that wonderment," he says frequently.) Robert Duvall is a twitchy, half-mad Jesse James, who pays the rent for a little old lady and her collection of "children" (dolls), but kills the landlord who was about to evict her. This is a rambunctious movie, undisciplined and a little sluggish, but trying hard to have a good time (you can't fault it for that). R.G. Armstrong plays Clell Miller, who leaves behind his mule farm and his wife to join the boys, and the great Elisha Cook Jr. plays a bank man. Paul Frees provides the voiceover narration. read more...

            King of Thieves (2019)

This Going in Style-like movie about "old codger" criminals -- based on a true story -- feels a little dry, and a little routine, but the great cast can still strike sparks enough to make it worth a look. read more...
