You Can't Take It with You (1938)

Frank Capra's You Can't Take It with You has been remastered in 4K digital and given a new Blu-ray treatment for 2015, and despite a few minor concepts ("there are 48 states"), most of its ideas are still appealingly relevant. Alice Sycamore (Jean Arthur) lives in a huge house with most of her family, plus some spouses and some hangers-on, and everyone is happy. Her grandfather Martin Vanderhof (Lionel Barrymore) believes in feeding the human soul by doing the things one loves, and he supports that in his home. He himself collects stamps; his daughter (Spring Byington) paints, a granddaughter dances, her husband plays the xylophone, and other family members make firecrackers in the basement. The newest foundling, Mr. Poppins (Donald Meek), makes masks and toys; he quits his job as an accountant to be there. read more...

Zootopia (2016)

Disney's Zootopia has some big ideas, some cuddly ones, and some very funny ones. Sometimes it may seem like these ideas are fighting for space, but the filmmakers keep the tone so light and vibrant that it all works. read more...

Paddington (2015)

First appearing in 1958, Paddington Bear is a creature of kindness and politeness, far from the wisecracking, marketable children's characters of today. Yet, somehow the new Paddington movie seems modern while at the same time holding firmly to its quaint, lovely ideals. Ben Whishaw voices the CGI bear, who is raised in darkest Peru under the indirect influence of an English explorer; he loves marmalade. He travels to London and finds a place to stay with the Browns (Hugh Bonneville and a delightful Sally Hawkins) and their children, Judy and Jonathan. Villains can often kill the mood in a children's film, but here it's Nicole Kidman as a driven taxidermist, and she makes the role worthwhile. Director and co-writer Paul King includes a few big slapstick moments, but they arise naturally out of the character's unfamiliarity with the civilized world, and only one brief burp/fart joke enters the proceedings. Perhaps the real appeal of this movie is that good manners never go out of style. read more...

Paddington 2 (2018)

Paul King's Paddington (2015) was so surprisingly wonderful and such an unlikely hit that it seemed nearly impossible for a sequel to be any good. Yet Paddington 2 currently holds a Rotten Tomatoes record, with a perfect 100% rating based on 172 reviews. (Now it will be 173; in full confession, my son and I skipped the press screening of Paddington 2 and we only caught up with it later after we saw the reviews.) read more...

The Campaign (2012)

It was only a matter of time before Will Ferrell adapted his trademark character, which channels childlike behavior into a large adult body, to the realm of politics, where it seems to fit perfectly. In the new movie The Campaign Ferrell stars as Cam Brady, a congressman from North Carolina who seeks to defend his seat during the latest election. read more...
