Leviathan (2013)

Technically it's a documentary about fishing trawler outside of New Bedford, Massachusetts, but Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel's Leviathan is more of an experimental film, strapping a dozen or so cameras to the ship's nets and chains and achieving something of an immersive, voyeuristic experience. The camera dips in and out of the ocean, sits at deck level as caught, dead fish slosh back and forth in leftover water, and watches as fishermen dutifully cut the good bits from the fish and kick the rest back into the ocean. read more...

Killer of Sheep (1977)

Charles Burnett's Killer of Sheep (1977) has perhaps been more written about and appreciated than actually seen. By now there's no question that it belongs in the canon of greatest American movies. If this film had been more widely available, it would have a secure place not only as the greatest achievement in African-American cinema but also as one of the great achievements in cinema, period. read more...

Gates of Heaven (1978)

Errol Morris's Gates of Heaven is a strange, sweet movie. At any moment it can make you weep, or rage at the treatment of its subjects. It can make you think twice about the nature of life as we know it. Technically, it's a movie about pet cemeteries, but specifically it's a movie about life and death and everything in-between. read more...

Diary of a Country Priest (1950)

One could say that 1999 was the year of Bresson. He hadn't made a movie in 17 years, but a retrospective of his work traveled all over the country to sold-out houses. On December 22, 1999, at the age of 98 (or 92, I've seen it listed as both) and just before the turn of the century, Bresson died. read more...

49 Up (2006)

In 1964, the British TV series "World in Action" hosted an episode entitled Seven Up! In it, director Paul Almond interviewed several seven year-old children from all different classes and backgrounds about what they would like to do with their lives. The theory was that, by the age of 7, children had already formed the personalities and thought patterns that would carry them throughout the rest of their lives. read more...
