49 Up (2006)

In 1964, the British TV series "World in Action" hosted an episode entitled Seven Up! In it, director Paul Almond interviewed several seven year-old children from all different classes and backgrounds about what they would like to do with their lives. The theory was that, by the age of 7, children had already formed the personalities and thought patterns that would carry them throughout the rest of their lives. read more...

An Autumn Afternoon (1962)

Last year, while making my way through Criterion Eclipse's five-disc Late Ozu DVD box set, I had a small revelation, and window to understanding this great master's work opened. I had always experienced a kind of relaxed bliss while watching his films, but I suddenly understood that this kind of tranquility comes only from acceptance -- acceptance of life's inevitable imperfections and disappointments. read more...

Boyhood (2014)

Director Richard Linklater does something truly visionary with Boyhood. Over the course of 12 years, beginning in 2002, he filmed actor Ellar Coltrane each year, whenever scheduling allowed, adding to the script a bit at a time. The resulting movie is a true existential experience, a masterpiece. It's not driven by plot -- it can't return to pick up past plot threads -- but rather driven by life itself. read more...

Moonlight (2016)

It has been eight years since Barry Jenkins' lovely feature debut Medicine for Melancholy (2008), which the Florida-born filmmaker shot while living in San Francisco; it was one of those releases so small that even "under the radar" was too big to describe it. Now he has relocated to Los Angeles, and his second feature film, Moonlight, is getting heavy buzz. It helps that times have changed. Discussions of homosexuality and race have been moved to the forefront, with the recent legalization of gay marriage, and Donald Trump's devil-may-care racism in the 2016 election. In fact, given the recent fizzle of Nate Parker's simplistic The Birth of a Nation, Jenkins's film has an outside chance to fill the void at this year's Oscars. read more...
