Alamar (2010)

It starts with the story of a whirlwind love affair between a man of Mayan heritage, Jorge, and an Italian woman, Roberta. They have a son, Natan, before they realize that their two worlds are just too different and they split up. Alamar begins as Natan goes to spend a little time with his father, a fisherman in the Banco Chinchorro area near Mexico. Jorge -- who works with his father, Natan's grandfather -- goes about his day and teaches Natan all about fishing and boating and snorkeling, as if they were the most amazing new toys. Natan becomes enamored of a beautiful egret he names Blanquita. read more...

Somewhere (2010)

People may view Sofia Coppola as spoiled and privileged, the daughter of Hollywood royalty who stumbled into filmmaking after trying and abandoning several other careers. Her films are not exactly plot-driven, which can further drive people crazy. I suspect that critics and viewers come to her films with a chip firmly planted on their collective shoulders, and not even a masterpiece from Coppola could change their mind. Either way, once you get right down to it, she's one of the most ferociously talented filmmakers working today, and she has indeed delivered masterpieces in her short career. read more...

In Jackson Heights (2015)

Frederick Wiseman (Boxing Gym, At Berkeley, National Gallery) returns with another of his singular documentaries. As with his other films, In Jackson Heights employs his unique fly-on-the-wall technique, wherein he somehow gets his camera close to people, to record their natural actions and reactions, without them seeming to notice or care. It feels like we're actually visiting. Jackson Heights is a neighborhood in Queens, NY, which boasts the largest melting pot in the world. Apparently some 167 languages are spoken in this one area. We meet some of these cultures and view them at work, and we see much preparation of delicious-looking food. We hear from gay groups and Latino immigrants, and we sit in on some classes. We also sit in on some neighborhood meetings because, of course, rich white people have begun to notice the neighborhood -- it's a quick train ride into Manhattan -- and have begun to attempt buying it up and gentrifying it. In one horrifying speech, a neighborhood man explains just how they do this, and folks wind up with no choice left but to sell. But despite the threat of losing everything, we see that the locals are strong, kind, wise people who have found a kind of harmony. (See Wiseman's official page for more info.) read more...

The White Diamond (2005)

The White Diamond is a documentary depicting the flight of an experimental airship over the rain forests of Guyana. The ever-extreme Herzog hitches a ride, even though the ship could easily go down and kill him. During downtimes, Herzog becomes curious about the people living in the jungle; he finds as much beauty and truth in their simple stories as he does in the Englishman (Dr. Graham Dorrington) who needs to fly. This is one of Herzog's most breathtaking and life-affirming films. read more...
