ABC Africa (2001)

In his first full-fledged documentary since Homework (1989), the great Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami journeys to Uganda, ostensibly to warn about the inhumanity of AIDS and the thousands of children orphaned as a result. But ABC Africa is unexpectedly humane and lovely and not at all preachy. read more...

49 Up (2006)

In 1964, the British TV series "World in Action" hosted an episode entitled Seven Up! In it, director Paul Almond interviewed several seven year-old children from all different classes and backgrounds about what they would like to do with their lives. The theory was that, by the age of 7, children had already formed the personalities and thought patterns that would carry them throughout the rest of their lives. read more...

Pather Panchali (1955)

Some films take a while to sink in, and others hit big immediately and then age badly, but Pather Panchali (or, roughly translated, "Song of the Road") was an "instant classic" that still plays well to this day. It dropped like a bomb on the huge, rigid Indian film industry, which preferred -- and still prefers -- romances and musicals with decidedly non-realistic settings. Like the Neo-Realist classics from postwar Italy (Open City, Bicycle Thieves) and the late 1960s, early 1970s Hollywood films (Easy Rider, M*A*S*H), it brought to cinema a new kind of realism that audiences were thirsty for. Certainly escapism has its place, but there's only so often, and so far, one can escape. At some point, one must face one's self. And if you recognize a little of yourself in Apu, then the film has done its job. read more...

No Loans Today (1995)

Back in 2000, I saw a wonderful movie called Getting to Know You, based on three Joyce Carol Oates stories, and then interviewed its maker, Lisanne Skyler, while sitting in the seats at the Roxie Cinema in San Francisco. In my research, I discovered the title of an earlier movie she did, a 55-minute documentary called No Loans Today. I never in a million years thought I'd get a chance to see it, until I received an email from Ms. Skyler, thirteen years after our interview. read more...

Somewhere (2010)

People may view Sofia Coppola as spoiled and privileged, the daughter of Hollywood royalty who stumbled into filmmaking after trying and abandoning several other careers. Her films are not exactly plot-driven, which can further drive people crazy. I suspect that critics and viewers come to her films with a chip firmly planted on their collective shoulders, and not even a masterpiece from Coppola could change their mind. Either way, once you get right down to it, she's one of the most ferociously talented filmmakers working today, and she has indeed delivered masterpieces in her short career. read more...
