    Three Christs (2020)

Based on a 1964 case study, Three Christs isn't the most dynamic idea for a movie; it mainly involves using fictitious letters as a form of psychological treatment, it has no real slam-bang conclusion, and it goes on too long to be really successful, but the setup at least allows for a bunch of fine actors to really chew the scenery during group therapy sessions. Richard Gere plays Dr. Stone, who doesn't believe in the electroshock therapy used at the time. When he is presented with three different patients who all believe that they are Jesus Christ, he comes up with an idea to put them together in their own private session, hoping that their confronting one another will lead to a breakthrough. They are Joseph (Peter Dinklage), Leon (Walton Goggins), and Clyde (Bradley Whitford), each with slightly different variations on their stories. Charlotte Hope has a tricky role as Becky, Dr. Stone's extremely pretty research assistant who sits in on the sessions, creating and enduring strong sexual tensions. Kevin Pollak, Stephen Root, Jane Alexander, Julianna Margulies, and James Monroe Iglehart co-star, some of whom provide the much-needed disbelief of Dr. Stone's methods in an attempt to ramp up the tension. The movie premiered at the 2017 Toronto Film Festival and sat on the shelf for over two years before release. Director Jon Avnet is a longtime veteran who previously worked with both Gere and Whitford on Red Corner (1997). read more...

      Sometimes Always Never (2020)

Though it may seem like the epitome of a "quirky" indie dramedy, Sometimes Always Never establishes itself as something different with its rich, polychrome production design, looking like a more somber Wes Anderson film or a more lightweight David Lynch film. Strange statues resting in green nooks are nestled in blood-red walls, while arcs of light and doorways create odd and wonderful framing. It brings a slightly unreal quality to the movie, and when the characters don't act totally realistically, it feels okay. read more...

        Pain and Glory (2019)

Pedro Almodóvar pays homage to Federico Fellini's 8 ½ — and if there's any doubt of that fact, a movie poster for that 1963 masterwork is on display in one shot — with Pain and Glory, the story of an aging filmmaker plagued with pain and doubt. Antonio Banderas won a Best Actor award at Cannes for his portrayal of Salvador Mallo, the director who hasn't worked in ages, and finds his life suddenly upended when an older film, Sabor, is restored and re-released. He and his leading man Alberto Crespo (Asier Etxeandia) are asked to participate in a Q&A, but the two men haven't spoken in decades. Salvador visits Alberto to talk, but instead Alberto snoops on Salvador's computer and finds a monologue that he decides he wants to perform as a play. During the visit, Alberto also gives Salvador — who suffers from many ailments — his first hit of heroin. read more...

          Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988)

This forgotten gem from the 1980s gets a Blu-ray release at long last. A feature directing debut by the acclaimed English filmmaker Terence Davies, Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988) is a two-parter (part one is "Distant Voices" and part two is "Still Lives"). Both parts tells the story of a family living in Liverpool during the 1940s and 1950s, with their trials and tribulations, weddings and funerals. Pete Postlethwaite plays the father, sometimes tender, but frequently cruel, although not everything is grim and depressing here. Davies uses popular music and the concept of memory to tell his story, deliberately allowing artificiality and staginess in his scenes, but always in a way that flows softly and lyrically. It's a beautifully poetic movie, and a small masterpiece. read more...
