Whisper of the Heart (1995)

This beautiful anime from Studio Ghibli has baffled the Disney marketing team, which is presenting it as a supernatural thriller of some sort, in which a girl gets whisked off by a talking cat. The actual film is quite a bit more enchanting; I kept waiting for the thrill-a-minute stuff to kick in and spoil the mood but, thankfully, it never does. read more...

    Winnie the Pooh (2011)

At a time when the Disney company was all about canny marketing decisions, their choice to make a hand-drawn Winnie the Pooh that runs only 65 minutes was a bold one. And though it was not promoted well and it did not earn big numbers, it was a gently pleasing surprise for those who saw it. It's based loosely on A.A. Milne's stories, updated slight, but not crudely, for modern times. It has a fresh comic rhythm, dreamy, without being vulgar. (It proudly sported a "G" rating.) The hand-drawn animation is simple, but unfailingly lovely. And the movie perfectly captures the funny, lovely mood of the originals, including the motif of the book itself, with the characters marching across written pages, interacting with letters. The incomparable Jim Cummings provides the voice of Pooh and Tigger, Tom Kenny joins the cast as Rabbit, and Craig Ferguson is Owl. John Cleese narrates. Stephen J. Anderson and Don Hall direct. read more...

    Under the Tuscan Sun (2003)

Set in an Italy where sexy blondes regularly re-create scenes from Fellini movies, Under the Tuscan Sun offers Americans the ultimate fantasy vacation. It's a beautiful, sunny, fresh air trip to Europe without the jet lag, language problems, money problems, or any other trivialities. Indeed, the movie wants to believe that Italians know best how to live life and that simply moving to Tuscany could make us all happy. read more...

    Hugo (2011)

It's appropriate to bring up movie history in this review, since Hugo is steeped in not only movie history, but also the passion for discovering movies, for watching movies, and for thinking about their power. But this movie history goes back a lot further than Scorsese himself, and Star Wars, far back into a time that, despite the wealth of information available, is relatively unknown to movie buffs today. read more...
