Election (2005)
Johnny To's sequel Triad Election was released in U.S. theaters in the summer of 2007, and by the end of the year, Tartan had released its predecessor Election on a Region 1 DVD. I saw them out of order, but it didn't particularly matter (although I do prefer the sequel). The action in Election revolves around the battle for the chairman position in the Wo Shing Society. The two top contenders are the volatile Big D (Tony Leung Ka Fai) and the more traditional, rational Lok (Simon Yam). Big D has bribed and threatened the senior members to get their vote, but Lok gets in anyway, so Big D steals the symbol of the chairman's power, the ancient Dragon Head Baton. read more...

Drug War (2013)
I've been following director Johnnie To's career for some time now, since I first saw and loved The Heroic Trio (1993). I have not seen all of his movies, as they don't often show up here in the States, and he tends to make them faster than I can find them. But I have seen a fair number, including the superb Election (2005), Triad Election (2006), and Exiled (2006). Yet the jaw-dropping new Drug War ups the ante. It's the best To film I've seen since The Heroic Trio. read more...

Exiled (2007)
After Johnny To's superb, Godfather-like Triad Election comes this equally amazing, but altogether different gangster film, much closer to a John Woo-like exploration of male bonding and astonishing, violent standoffs. read more...
