Cursed (2005)

The post-modern werewolf film appeared as early as Joe Dante's The Howling and John Landis's An American Werewolf in London (both 1981) and as recently as John Fawcett's Ginger Snaps (2001). And despite a screenplay by Kevin Williamson, who wrote the ultimate post-modern horror film, Scream, Wes Craven's Cursed doesn't add anything new to the pot. read more...

The Dead Zone (1983)

This adaptation of a Stephen King bestseller was David Cronenberg's first "job for hire" in Hollywood, and for a time it was also his most universally acclaimed movie. Maybe it served as a kind of inoculation toward his more personal works. Christopher Walken stars in a terrifically modulated performance, part deranged, part haunted, as Johnny Smith. Just after he becomes engaged to his beloved Sarah (Brooke Adams), he gets into a car accident that leaves him in a coma. Years later, he awakens to discover that not only is Sarah married to someone else, but also he has the power to see the future of anyone he touches. Trick 'r Treat (2007)

This direct-to-video horror movie, which was produced by Bryan Singer, has quickly picked up a devoted cult following, and deserves to be essential Halloween viewing every year for the most serious horror hounds. It's a great, intertwining anthology film, and it also contains several trivia tidbits about the history of Halloween. It's based loosely on writer/director Michael Dougherty's short cartoon, Season's Greeting, which introduced the character of "Sam," a half-adorable, half-creepy pint-sized trick-or-treater. read more...

What looks like a black-and-white sci-fi cheapie actually turns out to be quite a good, moody, spooky film. Hammer Studios' The Quatermass Xperiment (1955) was based on a BBC television serial, but featured an American star, Brian Donlevy (from Preston Sturges films) to help sell the movie abroad. read more...
