The Exorcist (1973)

I was too young to catch William Friedkin's The Exorcist when it first opened, but my parents owned a paperback copy of William Peter Blatty's novel. On the back cover was plastered a picture of the possessed Regan (played by Linda Blair) that gave me the chills. I used to sneak into my parents' bedroom to steal a look at that book and give myself a spine-tingle. I think that's the secret of the huge success of The Exorcist, that little tingle. read more...

Nocturnal Animals (2016)

Fashion designer Tom Ford directs his second film, after A Single Man (2009), an adaptation of a novel by Austin Wright. It's an interesting story, and it's very prettily told, but Ford doesn't seem to get inside the grisly, Straw Dogs-like themes of the story-within-the-story, nor does he seem to make a connection overall. Amy Adams plays Susan Morrow, an art gallery owner who lives in a beautiful apartment with a beautiful husband (Armie Hammer). An ex sends her the proof of his new novel, Nocturnal Animals. She reads, and we see the story of a family man (Jake Gyllenhaal) who is tormented by three evil hillbilly rednecks; they stop him on a night highway, kidnap his wife and daughter, and rape and kill them. A local police detective (Michael Shannon, a bright spot), ridden with lung cancer, helps him solve the crime. Then, we flash back to Susan meeting and starting a relationship with the author (also played by Gyllenhaal), eventually accusing him of being "weak." I guess the point is that he wrote the book as revenge on her? The movie doesn't completely coalesce, but it has enough twists and enough strong emotions to make it worth a look. read more...

Lost Highway (1997)

David Lynch teamed up with writer Barry Gifford (Wild at Heart) once again for this baffling, yet pulsating thriller. Bill Pullman and Patricia Arquette star as Fred and Renee Madison, a married couple that wakes up to find a videotape on their doorstep. On the tape is footage of them sleeping; the perpetrator apparently entered their home and filmed them just hours before. read more...

mother! (2017)

Darren Aronofsky's mother! — which includes the lowercase "m" and the exclamation point — is an unquestionably brilliant movie, even if its initial effect is less than brilliant. It's a movie that demands consideration and examination, all the more so because it seems to be one thing for about 90 to 95% of its running time, and then suddenly becomes something else. The effect is shocking, disorienting, and as moviegoers programmed to see things a certain way, it's easy to resist, to mock or dismiss. read more...
