The Blind Side (2009)

In 2002, screenwriter John Lee Hancock (A Perfect World, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil) directed a G-rated baseball movie, produced at Disney and based on a true story: The Rookie. It sounded like a pile of guck, and I nearly skipped it, but it turned out to be a very graceful, emotionally vivid film that eventually became my all-time favorite baseball movie. read more...

The Help (2011)

I just caught up with The Help, after it earned $169 million at the American box office, and scored four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It's also the thirteenth highest grossing movie of the year, and the #1 movie of the year that's not a sequel, prequel, remake or franchise of some kind. Here are some quick thoughts. read more...

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Steven Spielberg's sci-fi classic centered on the simple friendship between a boy and an alien rather than the rampant destruction and violence around a full-scale alien invasion. The story feels modern rather than nostalgic. It's set in the suburbs (much like Spielberg's other production from the same year, Poltergeist), and prominently features a single mom (Dee Wallace). The children -- Elliot (Henry Thomas), Gertie (Drew Barrymore), and Michael (Robert MacNaughton) -- are realistic, and use some strong language as well as testing and insulting one another (and adults), but they're genuinely curious and good-spirited. There's also the scene in which E.T. unknowingly drinks beer from the refrigerator and Elliot begins to feel its effects at school. Much of the movie is sweet and funny, but it grows fairly intense when E.T. falls ill and government agents descend upon poor Elliot's house. And young and old alike will find it difficult to choke back tears at the movie's final goodbye, but all in all, this is a deeply-felt, warm-hearted classic. read more...

The Descendants (2011)

As for me, I loved Sideways, though I was even fonder of Million Dollar Baby, the movie that eventually edged ahead and won the Oscar for Best Picture. (And I liked Before Sunset better than both.) I don't think I look much like Paul Giamatti, and I'm not sure how much I identify with him. But all these qualifiers aside, Payne's new movie, his first in seven years, isn't nearly as good. read more...
