Band of Outsiders (1964)

Here's a confession for you; I used to hate Jean-Luc Godard. I thought he was the most pretentious, dunderheaded filmmaker of all time. I mean, what's up with showing only the backs of everyone's heads in Vivre sa vie (1962), for Pete's sake? But little did I know I was already on the path of learning to appreciate, love, and cherish Godard. read more...

Macbeth (1948)

Like Fritz Lang and John Ford, Orson Welles found a certain amount of artistic freedom and the Poverty Row studio Republic Pictures. He shot this haunted Shakespeare adaptation quickly and cheaply by not recording sound; the actors dubbed their lines afterwards in a studio. The resulting Macbeth can be a bit ratty; lips don't always match the line readings, and the audio sometimes leaves a bit to be desired. But the film has a jagged, noir-ish aspect that makes it a masterpiece. read more...

Caché (2005)

Michael Haneke's films are among world cinema's most difficult and challenging. And yet, against all odds, he not only receives regular distribution in this country, he usually meets with enthusiastic acclaim from mainstream reviewers. Improbably, his unpleasant 2002 film The Piano Teacher even finished off its run as a bona fide box-office hit. read more...

Vivre sa vie (1962)

Andrew Sarris had the same feeling back in 1963, when he reviewed Vivre sa vie. Sarris first complained that Godard had made five films in France, but Vivre sa vie was only the second to open in the United States. (The first was À bout de souffle, otherwise known as Breathless, Godard's feature debut and still his most famous film.) Then he went on to mention that he hadn't quite got the newer film, but that Godard's films tend to age well and reward multiple viewings. It was a prophetic review, as Vivre sa vie has indeed aged well and rewarded the persistent, and it stacks up against Godard's greatest masterpieces. read more...

Hunger (2008)

Firstly, this Steve McQueen is a 39 year-old visual artist, and not the badass American action star who died in 1980. McQueen has made an astonishing feature debut with Hunger, which more or less tells the story of the final weeks in the life of Bobby Sands (Michael Fassbender). It's 1981, and Sands and other Irish Republican Army activists are stuck in Maze prison in Northern Ireland. Sands leads a hunger strike against the horrible prison conditions, which are indeed truly horrible. read more...
