The Rules of the Game (1939)

A man lights his newspaper on fire, other people boo and hiss, others storm out into the night, while still others swoon, sitting on the curb and taking long walks to fully digest the miracle they've just seen. Such was the reaction to Jean Renoir's The Rules of the Game, which opened in 1939 and was banned not long afterwards, during the Nazi occupation of France. Renoir cut the film down in hopes of saving it, but to no avail. Much of the negative for his original cut was subsequently destroyed during the war. read more...

It's hard to imagine anyone better than Laurence Olivier playing the twisted, lurching, serpentine Richard III, a Shakespearian villain that might even give Iago the shakes. Hamlet (1948)

Despite the three other very good movie versions of William Shakespeare's Hamlet (1990, 1996, and 2000), many world scholars still associate the quintessential film version with Laurence Olivier's 1948 version. It's almost as if Olivier were being credited with writing the play himself. But, having seen all four versions recently, I've come to realize that it's a difficult prospect to choose the best one. Rather, each version has elements that are superior but none renders the others completely obsolete. read more...
