    City That Never Sleeps (1953)

Decades ago, Martin Scorsese drew up a list of his 100 "guilty pleasures," which was published in Film Comment magazine. On this list was John H. Auer's City That Never Sleeps (1953). But unlike any of the other items on this list, this movie came with a footnote: "or any Auer film." That intrigued me. But information on Auer was hard to come by. He's not listed in Andrew Sarris's The American Cinema, nor David Thomson's Biographical Dictionary of Film. What I could dig up said that he was born in Hungary and was a child actor there. He came to Hollywood at some point and directed mostly "B" movies. City That Never Sleeps seems to be the one people consider his masterpiece. read more...

      Rosewater (2014)

Jon Stewart, of "The Daily Show," makes his directing debut with Rosewater, a movie about an imprisoned journalist (Gael Garcia Bernal) in Iran. But despite Stewart's comedy background, the movie gives over maybe 2% of its running time to mild chuckles. The rest is serious. What could have been an effective grilling of politics is now an "issue" movie. read more...

        Sometimes Always Never (2020)

Though it may seem like the epitome of a "quirky" indie dramedy, Sometimes Always Never establishes itself as something different with its rich, polychrome production design, looking like a more somber Wes Anderson film or a more lightweight David Lynch film. Strange statues resting in green nooks are nestled in blood-red walls, while arcs of light and doorways create odd and wonderful framing. It brings a slightly unreal quality to the movie, and when the characters don't act totally realistically, it feels okay. read more...

          Boulevard (2015)

Even if the movie stumbles over a few clunky plot turns, the final live-action performance of the late Robin Williams is a powerful one, still and deep, calling on limitless reserves of pain and longing. Dito Montiel directs, and typical of his work, his rich characters and realistic atmosphere outweigh his storytelling. In some of his films, the balance tips the wrong way, but in Boulevard, it works. And it's mainly thanks to Williams, in his most soul-searching mode, that it does. read more...

            Pain and Glory (2019)

Pedro Almodóvar pays homage to Federico Fellini's 8 ½ — and if there's any doubt of that fact, a movie poster for that 1963 masterwork is on display in one shot — with Pain and Glory, the story of an aging filmmaker plagued with pain and doubt. Antonio Banderas won a Best Actor award at Cannes for his portrayal of Salvador Mallo, the director who hasn't worked in ages, and finds his life suddenly upended when an older film, Sabor, is restored and re-released. He and his leading man Alberto Crespo (Asier Etxeandia) are asked to participate in a Q&A, but the two men haven't spoken in decades. Salvador visits Alberto to talk, but instead Alberto snoops on Salvador's computer and finds a monologue that he decides he wants to perform as a play. During the visit, Alberto also gives Salvador — who suffers from many ailments — his first hit of heroin. read more...
