Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)

This Disney animated adventure was a critical and box-office disappointment in the summer of 2001, with blame placed on the fact that it was not computer-animated, on its lack of musical numbers, and other factors. But in the years since, it has become one of the few bona-fide Disney cult classics, thanks in part to its art design, which was inspired by comic book genius and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, as well as a screenplay contribution by Joss Whedon, and a fine, rousing score by James Newton Howard. Its widescreen action make it one of the flat-out best-looking and most exciting Disney movies since the golden age. Michael J. Fox provides the voice of Milo, a young adventurer in 1916 who joins an expedition to find the lost city of Atlantis. Once there, he meets the beautiful Kida (voiced by Cree Summer) and must help save her civilization, as well as stopping the opportunistic Rourke (voiced by James Garner) from selling its secrets. read more...

The Jungle Book (2016)

Jon Favreau returns to the kid-friendly films he made earlier in his career (Elf and Zathura) and finds he still has a gift for breezy, good-looking, beautifully-paced, and well-told stories. His The Jungle Book owes a bit to the 1967 Disney animated feature, but is arguably closer to Kipling than that earlier film. read more...

Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)

Disney subsidiary Buena Vista recently bought the rights to the Japanese animated classic Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) and added dubbing by American stars, including Kirsten Dunst, the late Phil Hartman, Janeane Garofalo and Debbie Reynolds. The dubbing is just about the best I've ever seen, and is easily a match for the subtitled version. Either way, it's one of the very best animated films ever made. read more...

Hook (1991)

This Steven Spielberg fantasy feels like it's about half magic and wonder and half money and hubris. Many moments are wonderfully touching and heartfelt, but then many other moments feel as if the filmmakers were simply tossing money up in the air to see what happens. (Case in point: the lost boys on skateboards.) It's very long and expensive-looking, in a garish way. Though Robin Williams gets in some lovely moments, he seems a bit lost in the massive set design, which, oddly, looks more like a massive set design than it does an actual place. Julia Roberts was never quite right as Tinker Bell -- she's not "pixieish" enough -- no doubt cast because of her top spot on the "A" list than any other kind of qualifications. But somehow Dustin Hoffman landed in the role of Captain Hook and seems right at home there. The plot has Peter Pan (Williams) all grown up, with kids, and having forgotten all about who he is and where he came from. As with many Spielberg films, he's a bad dad -- too busy with work (he misses his son's baseball game!) -- and must learn how to be a good dad again. When Hook kidnaps his kids, he must travel to Never Never Land, team up with the Lost Boys, and remember who he is, to get them back. Bob Hoskins and Maggie Smith have supporting parts, and lots of people turn up in cameos. Hook was profitable and earned 5 Oscar nominations. Critics did not like it, but it's no doubt dear to the hearts of a generation of viewers. read more...
