    Bastards (2013)

The great French director Claire Denis has never been much for plots. She's more about mood, atmosphere, as well as focusing on the relationship between her characters and their environments. So it's an intriguing idea that she should take on a "film noir" type story, a genre that relies both on mood and on plot. The result does not necessarily rank with her greatest work, though it is certainly intriguing. read more...

    Days of Being Wild (1991)

Wong Kar-wai's atmospheric second film Days of Being Wild finally makes its official U.S. premiere. The film has passionately divided audiences since its 1991 Hong Kong debut, winning several HK awards, but flopping at the box office. Leslie Cheung plays Luddy, an arrogant serial seducer who picks up and abandons women without a thought. When he seduces a beautiful shop girl (Maggie Cheung), it starts a La Ronde-like chain of events that significantly changes the lives of everyone involved, including co-stars Andy Lau and Tony Leung Chiu-wai. Wong's always-striking visual style (beautifully shot by cinematographer Christopher Doyle) uses floating, neon colors and extreme angles to emphasize disconnected souls. read more...

    Red Desert (1964)

The great Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni continues his theme of alienation and disconnect with his first color film, Red Desert, and the effect is perhaps even more astounding than in his black and white films. Now, more so than using just shapes and spaces, Antonioni now gets to play with bright colors, and lack of colors. Everyone agrees that, in this regard, the film is a masterpiece, but the film once had -- and perhaps still has -- many detractors, arguing that Antonioni's musings don't amount to much. read more...

    La Notte (1961)

La Notte is the center piece of a trilogy by Michelangelo Antonioni; it comes between L'Avventura (1960) and L'Eclisse (1962), and it's the heaviest of the three. As the great critic David Thomson has pointed out, the other two films are about the beginnings of romance, or perhaps even casual flings. La Notte is about a marriage. It's serious. read more...
