Vanya on 42nd Street (1994)

I've never really seen anything like Vanya on 42nd Street. The movie starts with Louis Malle's familiar gritty, low budget camerawork that characterized My Dinner With Andre. We see Wallace Shawn, now more readily recognized on the street than he was thirteen years ago, standing eating a knish. Andre Gregory walks down 42nd street, followed by Julianne Moore and other actors. They meet in front of a dilapidated old theatre and go inside. We know we are going to see Chekov's Uncle Vanya. One woman says she's never seen it. Gregory begins to explain it to her. Everyone begins to wander around the beautiful, crumbling old theatre, chatting, setting up. Wallace Shawn lays down on a bench and shuts his eyes. Then he wakes up. Two people begin having a conversation. Slowly, we realize that the play has begun. Shawn is now Uncle Vanya. read more...

Somewhere (2010)

People may view Sofia Coppola as spoiled and privileged, the daughter of Hollywood royalty who stumbled into filmmaking after trying and abandoning several other careers. Her films are not exactly plot-driven, which can further drive people crazy. I suspect that critics and viewers come to her films with a chip firmly planted on their collective shoulders, and not even a masterpiece from Coppola could change their mind. Either way, once you get right down to it, she's one of the most ferociously talented filmmakers working today, and she has indeed delivered masterpieces in her short career. read more...

Leviathan (2013)

Technically it's a documentary about fishing trawler outside of New Bedford, Massachusetts, but Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel's Leviathan is more of an experimental film, strapping a dozen or so cameras to the ship's nets and chains and achieving something of an immersive, voyeuristic experience. The camera dips in and out of the ocean, sits at deck level as caught, dead fish slosh back and forth in leftover water, and watches as fishermen dutifully cut the good bits from the fish and kick the rest back into the ocean. read more...

Hale County This Morning, This Evening (2018)

RaMell Ross's Hale County This Morning, This Evening could have been one of those things that gets shot by your friend that always has his camera on, and then cobbled together on iMovie, but instead it's a deeply poetic, lyrical film that understands the beauty and importance of small moments of seeming nothingness. The movie ostensibly focuses on Daniel, who goes to college to play basketball, and Quincy, who winds up having children, but the film barely provides any biographical details or soul-searching moments. It simply watches them do what they do. They sometimes speak to, or acknowledge the camera, but mostly not. It's almost like a Frederick Wiseman film, but looser, taking time out for a time-lapse shot of cows in a field or stars at night. The result is less a complete portrait of people or a place than it is a meditation, or an impression, and it's a highly satisfying one. It's fitting that the great Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul served as "creative advisor," as Hale County This Morning, This Evening is the kind of experimental non-fiction work that Weerasethakul's debut feature Mysterious Object at Noon was. Danny Glover was an executive producer. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. read more...

Chantal Akerman by Chantal Akerman (1997)

I first heard about this film when one of my favorite film critics, J. Hoberman, chose it as one of 1997's ten best films. And now I finally have been able to see it. Chantal Akerman, who died in 2015, made this impressive film for a TV show about "filmmakers of our time." As she explains in the opening part of Chantal Akerman by Chantal Akerman, she chose a few names of directors, which had already been done. So she half-jokingly named herself, and the producers said "yes." read more...
