3 Godfathers (1948)

John Ford and Christmas seems like a perfect combo, and yet the old master included Christmas themes in only two films, a scene of a Hawaiian Christmas in Donovan's Reef (1963), and 3 Godfathers (1948). The latter was based on a 1913 novel by Peter B. Kyne, which has been filmed many times (including the very good anime version Tokyo Godfathers). The story is a fairly obvious allegory for the Three Wise Men who journey to see the baby Jesus, but with Ford's poetic touch, a sentimental story turns into a very solid, color Western. read more...

    [email protected] (2007)

In the wonderful new documentary Young @ Heart, a group of seventy, eighty and ninety-year olds get together and perform songs by Sonic Youth, Coldplay, James Brown, the Clash, David Bowie, the Ramones and other contemporary bands. It sounds dubious and cutesy, but within minutes it reveals itself as the real thing and doubt gives way to unbridled enthusiasm. It's the type of film that sometimes becomes a word-of-mouth hit, although converts won't want to talk too much about what happens; as you may guess, some of the singers don't have long to live and one or two of them don't make it to the end of the film. Several characters become fascinating in their own right, but none more so than troupe director Bob Cilman, who does not pander to his singers because of their age. He's a tough, brutal drill sergeant, but he can open his heart when it matters most. The film's director Stephen Walker adds his own narration and occasionally enters into the film, which somehow makes it feel less like a documentary; Walker is just as caught up in the moment as we are. Walker's wife, the producer Sally George, directed several funny music videos featuring the group, but the film's highlight has to be a truly emotionally overwhelming concert at a prison. (As of today, the group has a following in Europe and has a CD available.) read more...

    The Hero (2017)

As with his wonderful I'll See You in My Dreams, director Brett Haley manages to take an underused subject, i.e. a character over seventy, and make a movie that's deeply soulful and sweetly easygoing. read more...

    Florence Foster Jenkins (2016)

Meryl Streep stars in this based-on-a-true-story drama, with a fairly tough job to do. As the title character, she has to sound like someone who has opera training, but is still unable to sing a lick; she has to make big sounds and have them come out comically wrong. She, of course, nails it, but the real heavy lifting in this movie is done by Hugh Grant as her husband St. Clair, and Simon Helberg as Cosmé McMoon, the nervously smiling pianist she has hired to accompany her. Florence Foster Jenkins takes place in the 1940s, and the joke is that, because the world is at war, people need whatever laughs they can get and Florence's records and concerts become very popular as comedy, even though Florence herself is unaware of this. Writer Nicholas Martin and director Stephen Frears bring a certain amount of class to the story; it doesn't resort to lazy or stupid slapstick or farce, and the weight of the relationships with the male characters come through, even if Florence's own single-minded delusion makes her the least interesting of the trio. (She eats lots of potato salad, carries a mysterious briefcase, etc.) It received an Oscar nomination for Costume Design, and Streep received her 20th nomination for acting, although she could just as easily have been nominated for her Golden Globes speech a few weeks earlier. read more...

      Pride (2014)

Lately, it seems that every couple of months we get a new movie in The Full Monty mode: a sweet U.K. comedy-drama about plucky working-class folks who do something terribly out of the ordinary to save the community; in the process, several of the stuffier characters usually learn to lighten up and love life. Directed by Matthew Warchus (whose only other film is the forgotten, 15 year-old Simpatico), Pride is probably one of the better examples, leaning less toward cuteness a bit more toward earnestness. read more...
