The House I Live In (2012)

Noted documentary filmmaker Eugene Jarecki, brother of filmmakers Andrew (Capturing the Friedmans) and Nicholas (Arbitrage), goes about his bold The House I Live In in just the right way. He begins it with a personal touch, an interview with his family's former housekeeper, Nannie Jeter (that's her real name). Her responses inspire Jarecki to look further into the "War on Drugs," its history, and its long-term damaging effects on the United States. read more...

Crumb (1995)

I am writing this the following morning after seeing it, and I have dreamt about Crumb all night. The documentary about cartoonist Robert Crumb and his two brothers by filmmaker and friend Terry Zwigoff is one of the bravest and most honest films I've ever seen. To me, a great documentary is one in which, no matter how brutal or tragic, we feel lucky that the subject has been captured and saved on film to be looked at and experienced forever. read more...

Romántico (2005)

Mark Becker's Romantico is my favorite documentary in well over a year, simply because it's about a person rather than an issue. It begins in San Francisco's Mission District as Carmelo Muñiz Sanchez, a mariachi, serenades the customers at the neighborhood's various yummy tacquerias. We learn that Carmelo makes about $100 a night, a portion of which he sends back to his wife and two daughters in Mexico. After a while he misses them too much and returns, but work isn't so plentiful or lucrative there. Worse, his chances of returning to the U.S. are slim, at best. read more...

Jafar Panahi's Taxi (2015)

Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi looks relaxed onscreen in Jafar Panahi's Taxi, although he has no reason in the world to be that way. He's one of a few genuine outlaw directors in the history of cinema. Though his career began well enough, with the wonderful films The White Balloon (1995) and The Mirror (1997), he ran into trouble on his third film The Circle (2000). Unable to get the movie approved by the Iranian government, he smuggled it out of the country for film festival showings and an eventual 2001 U.S. release (where it was one of the best movies of that year). Crimson Gold (2003) and Offside (2006) followed, but then Panahi's luck ran out. He was arrested for creating anti-government propaganda. He served some jail time, but a petition of world filmmakers eventually helped to get him released. Today, he is forbidden to leave the country (some reports say he was under house arrest, but the New York Times recently confirmed that this is not the case). And, starting in 2010, he was slapped with a 20 year-ban on filmmaking. read more...

42 Up (1999)

This was my first time to the Up documentaries of Michael Apted, but I've been aware of them since 1985, when the fourth installment, 28 Up came out. Even knowing what the project was and how it was being carried out was enough to impress me, without even seeing it. But seeing one of the films adds a depth that one can hardly imagine. read more...
