The Great Escape (1963)

Director John Sturges (1910-92) was known for his manly action pictures and for his beautiful use of the widescreen frame. Unfortunately, he was also known for inflating and expanding his pictures until they resembled giant self-important works of art, even if they were still nothing more than manly action pictures. His best film is still the small, unpretentious Bad Day at Black Rock (1955), but his fans prefer The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape. Those two films offer the chance to enjoy a rugged action picture without feeling guilty. They're both so epic in scope and so high-minded in spirit that they can't be just a waste of time, can they? read more...

Snowpiercer (2014)

One of the world's most talented filmmakers, Korean director Bong Joon-ho (Memories of Murder, The Host, Mother) has proven that he can handle strong themes in varied material, but with confident pacing and impressive visuals. Snowpiercer is a big film with a large cast, but Bong brilliantly juggles fights, characters, and ideas -- including a savvy use of food -- and fits it all succinctly within his amazing visual design and scope. read more...

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

The toughest job a filmmaker can take on is translating a beloved novel to the screen: you're torn between being completely faithful and showing your own vision. Whereas Chris Columbus made Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone with no directorial personality whatsoever, the new The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was helmed by the far more interesting Peter Jackson, who made the 1994 masterpiece Heavenly Creatures and the raunchy B-movies Bad Taste and Dead-Alive. Rather than delivering a faceless product, Jackson imbues his personal signature on the fantasy epic, while still sticking close to the source. read more...

Fearless (2006)

In a perfect world, Jet Li would receive an Oscar nomination for his performance in the new film Fearless. After all, it's a biopic, based on a true story and a real person, and the Academy likes nothing better (except maybe physical deformities or mental illnesses). read more...
