Beauty and the Beast (1946)

Jean Cocteau is perhaps known primarily as a poet and a writer who became fascinated by cinema. One of his earliest attempts at film, Blood of a Poet (1930) was a random, plotless collection of bizarre images with more than just a hint of Luis Bunuel in their inspiration. read more...

Alice in Wonderland (2010)

Tim Burton's 14th feature film and his seventh with Johnny Depp, Alice in Wonderland is not a strict adaptation of the beloved Lewis Carroll novel of 1865. Rather, it's something like a post-modern tale of self-discovery, although it works better as a nutty fantasy than as anything with a point. read more...

The Mummy (1932)

Far from featuring a mindless, bandage-clad monster shambling around and moaning at people, The Mummy is more an intricately lit, atmospheric chiller where the biggest shock comes from entering an eerily decorated room. read more...

Son of Frankenstein (1939)

Boris Karloff returned to play the monster in the third film in the series, even though director James Whale (of Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein) had moved on to other things. Son of Frankenstein (1939) is actually very entertaining and visually striking, and retains much of the humor from the first two films. Basil Rathbone stars as the titular son, who moves his family to his father's old castle, and finds the body of the old monster. He, of course, tries to resurrect it to restore honor to the family name. Fans of Mel Brooks will notice many elements in this film inspiring Young Frankenstein (1974). Bela Lugosi also turns up here (in his fifth of eight films with Karloff), giving a very fine supporting performance as Ygor, the assistant with the twisted, broken neck. Ward Bond appears in a small, uncredited role. Frank Skinner provided the terrific score. read more...

Nosferatu (1922)

A small handful of movie fans caught a glimpse of a genius last winter in Shadow of the Vampire, which presented a fictional take on the silent vampire movie Nosferatu. Willem Dafoe walked away with an Oscar nomination as Max Schrek, who turns out to be a real vampire, but it was John Malkovich who portrayed the master filmmaker Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. read more...
