Man Down (2016)

This war drama contains an earnest plea, a call for sympathy and understanding for soldiers suffering from PTSD, but the movie is so scattershot, somber, and confusing, that it never comes together. Director Dito Montiel is also a novelist and likes to tell stories about complex, urban men, but sometimes his ambition exceeds his reach, and his movies end up overly serious and a little simplistic. Man Down has the double-edged misfortune of being simplistic and complex at the same time. read more...

Love in the City (1953)

Love in the City may be the most depressing movie ever made, but after watching it I was too depressed to consider any other movies that might also qualify for the title. It's a "message movie" of the worst sort, a movie that claims to be a new and aware kind of cinema, but that in reality adopts a holier-than-thou attitude and preaches down to its audience, "isn't life horrible and why aren't you doing something about it?" read more...

The Party (2018)

This playlike drama is sharp and good-looking (in black-and-white), but it's also shrill and aggressive, hurling its nasty, witty barbs at the speed of suffering; it's smart without being thoughtful. read more...

Othello (1952)

I was lucky enough to see the 1992 restoration of Orson Welles' Othello on the big screen, followed closely by the Criterion laserdisc version, which chose to showcase Welles' original cut; some experts claimed that the restoration compromised Welles' sound design. Either way, Othello is a stunning film. read more...

The Place Beyond the Pines (2013)

With his excellent Blue Valentine, writer/director Derek Cianfrance explored a husband-wife relationship with astounding depth by flipping back and forth between two time periods: the beginning and the end of the relationship. His new The Place Beyond the Pines is quite a bit more ambitious, now spanning a great deal more time and involving three narrative chunks that tie together one story. Yet it employs the same patient observation, a dedication to realism, but with a uniquely cinematic view. read more...
