The Devil's Backbone (2001)

You wouldn't think that a wide-open adobe school out in the middle of the Spanish desert would be an ideal place to set a horror film. But writer/director Guillermo del Toro (Cronos and Mimic) finds plenty of dark places and secrets there to provide a more than chilling picture with The Devil's Backbone, opening today in Bay Area theaters. read more...

Black Sabbath (1963)

Because of the success of Black Sunday, American distributors re-titled Bava's I Tre volti della paura (1963) (or, The Three Faces of Fear), as Black Sabbath. Boris Karloff stars as a kind of host to this trilogy of short pieces, and also appears in the second one, "The Wurdalak." The other segments include "The Drop of Water," about a nurse hired to prepare a corpse for burial, and "The Telephone," set entirely in a basement apartment. Bava's striking use of colors and strange spaces is at its peak here. I'm not easily scared, but this one gave me chills. One of Bava's best. (Of course, the famous heavy metal band borrowed their name from this movie.) read more...

Body Snatchers (1993)

Three legends of "B" and horror movies teamed up, in an unlikely way, for this second remake of Jack Finney's Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Filmmaker Larry Cohen (It's Alive) is co-credited with the "story," which means that something he wrote was probably re-written. Director Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator) is co-credited with the screenplay. And Abel Ferrara wound up directing. However jumbled the movie's creation, the result is the real thing, intelligent, with genuine spine-tingles. read more...

Isle of the Dead (1945)

When a plague strikes in the year 1912, General Nikolas Pherides, a.k.a. "the Watchdog" (Boris Karloff), is among a group of people quarantined on a Greek island. Paranoia sets in when an old woman accuses a beautiful housekeeper (Ellen Drew) of being a "vorvolaka," or a kind of vampire. Directed by Mark Robson, it's probably the most uneven of all the Val Lewton horror films, but it also contains a few genuine scares, and a few of Lewton's trademark visuals. Warner Archive released the film on a gorgeous Blu-ray in 2021, with a commentary track by film historian Dr. Steve Haberman and a theatrical trailer. read more...
