Amistad (1997)

It all starts with a nail, just as Schindler's List began with a candle. The nail is pulled out of a stone by bare, bleeding fingers. A face covered in beady sweat is seen and harsh breathing is heard. These are the last moments of being captured and the first moments of freedom. Soon, Cinque (Djimon Hounsou) will lead a band of slaves against their captors, in the middle of a lightning storm, in the extraordinary first 10 minutes of Steven Spielberg's new film, Amistad. read more...

Forrest Gump (1994)

I have written elsewhere that Forrest Gump is my least favorite movie ever made. To tell the truth, that's a bit of hyperbole. It was an extreme reaction to a movie that became a phenomenon. If the movie had been a flop, I might have given it the rating it deserves, and the rating I'm giving it now, two stars out of four. Far from the worst movie ever made. (As of this writing, July of 2013, the worst movie I ever saw came out just a few months back. It's called InAPPropriate Comedy. If you don't believe me, see for yourself, though I don't recommend it.) read more...

The Martian (2015)

On the website They Shoot Pictures, Don't They?, Ridley Scott is rated among the 50 best directors of all time, one of only 11 living souls on the list. This rating is largely based on two films, both sci-fi efforts, Alien (1979) and Blade Runner (1982), as well as Thelma and Louise (1991) running a distant third. It certainly is not based on movies like Legend (1985), 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), or any of a half-dozen other duds; he has arguably made more bad movies than any other "great" director. Thankfully, as of late he has been making a few good ones to offset the clunkers. One of them, Prometheus (2012), his third foray into sci-fi, excited fans and now The Martian looks to do the same. read more...

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

It took the success of Star Wars to get the first Star Trek movie off the ground -- ten years after the TV show was cancelled. Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) didn't exactly suffer from any budgetary constraints, but Paramount hustled the movie into theaters prematurely, and the slow and bizarre film puzzled most people who saw it. Happily, this new DVD allowed director Robert Wise to re-edit the movie and re-work many of the slapdash special effects. The result is tantamount to a brand-new film with a new pace and a new look. read more...
