Leave Her to Heaven (1945)

Gene Tierney received her only Oscar nomination for her role in Leave Her to Heaven, as a psychotically jealous beauty bent on destroying the men in her life. Directed by John M. Stahl, the film is notable for its exquisite Technicolor cinematography, used in direct contrast to the story's dark, noirish qualities. As Ellen, Tierney makes a striking entrance, gazing with fixed intensity at writer Richard Harland (Cornel Wilde) on a train. They eventually marry, but Ellen becomes jealous of Richard's invalid brother (Darryl Hickman). Vincent Price co-stars -- in a role similar to the one he played in Laura -- as Tierney's jilted former lover. read more...

The Asphalt Jungle (1950)

While still making its colorful feel-good musicals and comedies, MGM opened a second wing in the late '40s and early '50s to make grittier, more realistic dramas. John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle is one of these. Though it was conceived to look like a low-budget "B" movie, it featured an "A"-list director who had just won an Oscar (for The Treasure of the Sierra Madre), and an excessive running time (112 minutes) that would have disqualified it for "B" movie status. read more...

      Sunset Boulevard (1950)

Of all Billy Wilder's cinematic creations, the most inspired is arguably the device of having Sunset Boulevard (1950) narrated by a dead man. The movie opens with the unforgettable image of screenwriter Joe Gillis (William Holden) floating upside down in a pool, while he speaks to us on the soundtrack. He has the ultimate gift of hindsight as he tells his bizarre story that could only have happened in Hollywood. (Sunset Boulevard plays May 5 - 12 at San Francisco's Bridge Theater.) read more...
