Manhattan (1979)

For a long time, I was unable to choose a favorite Woody Allen film. Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) had been a life-changing experience for me, and Annie Hall (1977) and Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) are clearly masterworks. Not to mention Radio Days (1987), Husbands and Wives (1992), and many others. But I recently saw Manhattan again, for perhaps the fifth time, and my absolute joy as I sat there surpassed any other Allen film in recent memory. read more...

The Shop Around the Corner (1940)

Ernst Lubitsch's masterpiece (remade in 1998 as You've Got Mail) takes place in a Hungarian shop during the Christmas holiday. Times are tough and the workers are intimidated by their stern boss Mr. Matuschek (Frank Morgan). So when Alfred Kralik (Jimmy Stewart) and Klara Novak (Margaret Sullavan) become secret pen-pals -- unbeknownst to each other -- they must deal with more than a few obstacles to find true love. This might be Lubitsch's gentlest work: sweetness mixed with a genuine sadness. Stewart and Sullavan are wonderful, and Warners' DVD presents them in a beautiful black-and-white DVD transfer. read more...

All About Eve (1950)

Few Best Picture Oscar winners hold up over the years, and fewer still are as beloved as All About Eve (1950), which opens today at the Castro Theater and runs through Thursday in a sparkling new print. It's one of the few winners in that category that's not about war veterans, alcoholics or idiots. Instead, it's about the glory of acting. read more...

Ninotchka (1939)

This highly enjoyable comedy -- one of the greatest ever made -- actually comes about despite three incredible talents working against each other. Greta Garbo stars as Ninotchka, a Russian Agent who comes to Paris to supervise the sale of priceless jewels. Her comrades have been sent before her and have proved susceptible to the temptations of Paris. Ninotchka is not so easy. read more...

Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)

Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) is one of Woody Allen's best, and tellingly, one of his few 1980s films to be set in the present day (a strong nostalgia runs through these years). read more...
