Three Kings (1999)

George Clooney stars in this highly unusual, ultra-modern war movie. He plays Archie Gates, a soldier stationed in Iraq at the tail end of the Gulf War. Accompanied by Troy Barlow (Mark Wahlberg), Chief Elgin (Ice Cube), and Conrad Vig (Spike Jonze), he sets off to plunder a cache of gold (stolen by Saddam Hussein from Kuwait). But the soldiers find themselves in a situation where they must help a group of Iraqi civilians being terrorized by their own army. read more...

The Other Side of the Wind (2018)

In certain circles, a new film by Orson Welles is an event worthy of major enthusiasm. But there's also a certain amount of trepidation involved: What if it's no good? What if I watch it and it's not immediately apparent that it's a masterpiece? The reviews that have trickled in so far have been mainly kind; the reviewers tackled the dense, brainy, weird The Other Side of the Wind and wrote positive, if not exactly glowing reviews. Others simply panned it, perhaps not finding the characters easy enough to like. Truthfully, it's not a movie that will be simple for casual moviegoers to sit through. Indeed, it won't even be easy for people that have only seen Citizen Kane to sit through (it's very, very far away from Citizen Kane). But I nevertheless think it's a great film, and one that will interesting to re-visit and re-assess. read more...

    Venus in Fur (2014)

Throughout his entire career, from his feature debut Knife in the Water (1962) to the recent Carnage (2011), director Roman Polanski has specialized in wringing psychological tension from just a few characters (or one character) who are stuck and coming to pieces within limited spaces. In Venus in Fur, that place happens to be in the theater, and because it's based on a play by David Ives, some viewers may find it too stagy or stagebound. However, Polanski does not use the theater setting like a stage, and Venus in Fur moves very much like a movie, and a highly skilled one. read more...

    Maps to the Stars (2015)

The main problem with David Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars isn't really in the film it all. It's just the fact that there are already so many movies about the seamy underbelly of Hollywood, and how self-centered everyone there is and how ridiculous the entire business is. If you've seen a few of these movies, you may not think you're seeing anything new or special here. But Cronenberg is one of the greatest directors alive, and the unique and fascinating way in which he sees things is reason enough to watch. read more...

    Alphaville (1965)

Jean-Luc Godard's Alphaville ostensibly combines the detective genre with the sci-fi genre, but the result is all Godard. It stars American actor Eddie Constantine as private eye Lemmy Caution, a role that Constantine had already played in several cheap "B" movies. (Did Godard actually watch some of them?) Caution is called to the outlands, to Alphaville, a sinister city run by an evil computer; it's supposed to be the future, but it's really just Paris in 1965. No effort was made to disguise it or dress it up, although it certainly does look uninviting. read more...
