The Guilty (2018)

This electrifying, drum-tight thriller from Denmark somehow, remarkably, made the shortlist for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nomination, despite not being about anything important or depressing. It focuses largely on one character, Asger Holm (Jakob Cedergren), a police officer who has been temporarily assigned to manning the phones at dispatch while awaiting a misconduct trial. It's his last day before the trial, and he is hopeful that things will go well and he can return to his job. He answers a few routine calls before hearing from a woman who seems to have been kidnapped. Using only the phone and his instincts, he attempts to rescue her, but discovers that something much bigger is going on. Director Gustav Möller stays razor-focused on Asger, never leaving the dispatch office, with only a few other characters moving in and out of the picture. The voices on the phone are never seen. Even with such a limited palette, Möller keeps things moving with expertly chosen close-ups, wider shots, and cuts, and especially the lights on the phone banks. The Guilty probably has very little chance of getting the nomination, but it's amazingly exciting and well worth seeking out. read more...

Filmworker (2018)

I've been doing this a long time and I thought I knew a lot about Stanley Kubrick, but I didn't know about Leon Vitali. Vitali was a versatile, Shakespearian-trained actor. He has a pivotal role in Kubrick's Barry Lyndon (1975), but was so enamored of the director's genius and mastery that he made a fateful decision. He quit acting and went to work with Kubrick, in whatever capacity he could. Therefore, Kubrick had him doing just about everything, from casting to designing advertising materials, from supervising foreign trailers, to color-correcting prints. He was almost solely in charge of Danny Lloyd during the making of The Shining (and in charge of fudging the child's schedule so Kubrick could work around child labor laws). And former drill sergeant R. Lee Ermey (recently passed away) recounts, misty-eyed, how he owed his role and his performance in Full Metal Jacket to Vitali. read more...

    The Stanford Prison Experiment (2015)

A movie about the real-life 1971 Stanford prison experiment could have been sadistic and unwatchable, director Kyle Patrick Alvarez's clinical approach focuses on realism and psychological drama rather than on thrills. Alvarez doesn't try to professionally polish the prison setting; instead it has a functional, homemade look that makes it feel more immediate. The way the characters wear their hair and clothes, and they way they carry themselves contributes to what feels like an authentic period piece. read more...

Tod Browning's final film Miracles for Sale is a 71-minute wonder made at MGM; I'm not sure if it was released as a "B" movie, but it sure feels like one, and that's meant as a compliment. read more...
