    Last Weekend (2014)

The wonderful Patricia Clarkson is the best thing in Last Weekend. But not even she can get her mouth around the movie's stiff, tacky dialogue that sounds less lifelike than it would have if it had been expressed in animal noises, grunts, and growls. Part of the problem is that these characters are wealthy and the filmmakers do not understand how to make them seem human to non-wealthy moviegoers. But another part of the problem is that the characters, their situations, and they way they talk about them and deal with them, are just incredibly uninteresting. read more...

      Sleep, My Love (1948)

Claudette Colbert stars as Alison Courtland, a happily married, well-to-do housewife who begins the film by waking up on a train, not knowing how she got there. To make matters worse, she has a gun in her handbag. After causing a ruckus and after speaking to her concerned husband Richard (Don Ameche) on the phone, arrangements are made for her to fly back home. On the way, she runs into an old friend, jabbermouth Barby (Rita Johnson), and Barby's handsome pal Bruce Elcott (Robert Cummings), who makes the return trip with Alison. Bruce makes a pass at Alison, but when he finds out she's married, he sheepishly agrees to be a gentleman. read more...

      Rebel in the Rye (2017)

Just about everyone who grew up in the past sixty years reading and loving books has come across J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye and discovered something of themselves within its pages; it's one of those cultural beacons that somehow represents the human condition. Salinger, who died in 2010, famously refused to sell the movie rights to his works (only one of his short stories, "Uncle Wiggly in Connecticut," was adapted for the screen, made into a movie called My Foolish Heart). Now here comes a most conventional, but smoothly watchable, biopic. read more...

        What's Cooking? (2000)

This one could be classified as a so-called "chick flick," but What's Cooking? (2000) is so nicely balanced and fine-tuned by director Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham) that it turns into an honest holiday film, filled with plenty of delicious-looking shots of Thanksgiving dishes being prepared and served. It focuses on four families: one Jewish, one Vietnamese, one African-American, and one Latino, as they go about their holidays, filled with personal dramas. A son lies to his family to spend the holiday with his girlfriend, a lesbian couple tries to cope with conservative parents, a pushy mother-in-law gets in the way, an ex-husband is accidentally invited to dinner, and a gun is found in a teen's backpack. The stories are universal and could apply to anyone of any background, and indeed, the 17 year-old movie is surprisingly timeless (a political discussion in one scene could easily apply to last year's election). Chadha co-wrote the screenplay with her husband Paul Mayeda Berges. The all-star cast includes Joan Chen, Julianna Margulies, Kyra Sedgwick, Mercedes Ruehl, Lainie Kazan, Alfre Woodard, and Dennis Haysbert. read more...

Better Call Saul: Season Two (2016)

There's no reason this show should have been as good as it is. A spinoff from the greatest TV show of all time, Breaking Bad? It sounds like a terrible idea. But it was always intriguing, given that creator Vince Gilligan (also a writer on The X-Files) was behind it. And, indeed, as soon as Better Call Saul started in 2015, it was instantly its own entity, alive and amazing in its own way. read more...
