The Mummy (1932)

Far from featuring a mindless, bandage-clad monster shambling around and moaning at people, The Mummy is more an intricately lit, atmospheric chiller where the biggest shock comes from entering an eerily decorated room. read more...

Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

Director James Whale was approached four years after the enormous success of Frankenstein (1931) to do a sequel. His contract was such that he could refuse unless the project interested him. Whatever he saw in the script for Bride of Frankenstein, he was inspired, and he did it right. Now, Bride of Frankenstein is one of the greatest of all horror films. I recently got to see it in a beautiful new print as part of a new program of classic Universal horror films. read more...

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)

Robert Wise directed this very good, but slowish and slightly high-minded, sci-fi picture about an alien (Michael Rennie) and his robot landing on earth and causing all kinds of hysteria. Bernard Herrmann adds one of his most famous scores, complete with the ghostly, wailing Theremin music. Fox's DVD and the disc includes documentaries, stills and trailers as well as Edmund H. North's shooting script. Wise provides a director's commentary track. Wise's next two forays into sci-fi would be The Andromeda Strain and Star Trek: The Motion Picture. read more...

The Hunt (2013)

Haling from Denmark and directed by Thomas Vinterberg (The Celebration), The Hunt seems to me one of those movies created for the purpose of being officially approved for export and submitted to the Academy for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. In other words, it's heavy on issues and light on artistry, and generally pretty disposable once awards season is over. Perhaps even worse, The Hunt starts off with great promise before it fails. read more...

The Host (2007)

The new giant monster movie by Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho, The Host, caused a stir at Cannes, became the highest grossing film in Korean history and has been proclaimed an official masterpiece by Cahiers du Cinema. A spooky knuckle-biter with genuine moments of heartbreaking genius, it begins with a flashback to a callous lab technician ordering a flunky to dump dozens of vials of formaldehyde down the drain, which leads directly into Korea's Han River. read more...
